Happy Birthday Navy Divers! ⚓ Since August 1, 1882, when the first U.S. Navy divers plunged into the waters off Newport, Rhode Island, they have set the standard for bravery and innovation. From peacetime missions to every major conflict in history, these Sailors have continually advanced diving technology and tactics. Their dedication and skill have earned them numerous honors, including seven Medal of Honor recipients, the highest military accolade. Today, we celebrate their legacy of excellence and the enduring spirit that drives them to rise to every challenge. 🌊🔧

In its recently released 2024 Arctic Strategy, the Department of Defense calls for “… enhancing our domain awareness and Arctic capabilities; engaging with Allies, partners, and key stakeholders; and exercising tailored presence.” For years, NPS faculty-student teams have contributed to Arctic research and our Navy’s understanding of how to conduct maritime operations in this extreme environment, most recently at Operation Ice Camp 2024 this past March. Two NPS Department of Oceanography faculty members, retired U.S. Navy Cmdr. John Joseph and Dr. Ben Reeder, and students Lt. Cmdr. Colleen Wilmington and Lt. Cmdr. Taylor Hudson led the NPS effort this year at Operation Ice Camp, formerly known as ICEX. The NPS team worked with the Undersea Warfighting Development Center’s Arctic Submarine Laboratory (ASL) conducting a series of experiments, yielding data that continues to provide invaluable insights into long-range acoustic propagation under, through and above the Arctic ice. “On a scale of one to 10, I’d put it at an 11,” said Joseph. “We were able to accomplish essentially all of our scientific objectives. The data we collected will help us better understand the impact that a changing Arctic has on the Navy’s ASW (anti-submarine warfare) and ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) missions.” According to Wilmington, the data collected by the NPS team was a veritable gold mine for the students’ theses. “I think it’s a really unique opportunity to be able to go up and collect your own data,” she said. “The amount of data that we collected across our five days there provides more than enough data to analyze for the next 10 years!” During the expedition, the NPS team also met with two distinguished NPS alumni who were on their way to Ice Camp – Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, a space systems operations graduate, and Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), a NASA Hall of Fame astronaut and NPS aeronautical engineering graduate. • Read the full story about the NPS team at Operation Ice Camp 2024: https://lnkd.in/gccBHgq3 • Learn more about meteorology and oceanography at NPS: https://nps.edu/web/metoc US Navy | United States Marine Corps | Office of the Secretary of the Navy | Office of Naval Research | U.S. Naval Research Laboratory | Undersea Warfighting Development Center (UWDC) | Commander, Submarine Forces | Commander, Submarine Force Atlantic | U.S. Pacific Fleet | COMSUBPAC #BlueArctic #IceCamp 📸 - MC1 Justin Yarborough, MC2 Aaron T.
