It’s EPA’s job to protect people from exposure to dangerous chemicals. We’ve issued an emergency order to stop the use of the pesticide DCPA to protect the unborn babies of pregnant mothers that are exposed to this chemical. This is the first time in almost 40 years EPA has taken this type of emergency action. https://lnkd.in/er9EFwqH

About us
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) mission is to protect human health and the environment. EPA works to ensure that: - Americans have clean air, land and water; - National efforts to reduce environmental risks are based on the best available scientific information; - Federal laws protecting human health and the environment are administered and enforced fairly, effectively and as Congress intended; - Environmental stewardship is integral to U.S. policies concerning natural resources, human health, economic growth, energy, transportation, agriculture, industry, and international trade, and these factors are similarly considered in establishing environmental policy; - All parts of society--communities, individuals, businesses, and state, local and tribal governments--have access to accurate information sufficient to effectively participate in managing human health and environmental risks; - Contaminated lands and toxic sites are cleaned up by potentially responsible parties and revitalized; and - Chemicals in the marketplace are reviewed for safety. The agency was founded in 1970 and is headquartered in Washington, District of Columbia with ten additional regional headquarters offices (Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, Denver, San Francisco, and Seattle) as well as more than a dozen laboratories, and other regional and programmatic offices.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widely used, long-lasting chemicals, components of which break down very slowly over time. Studies have shown that PFAS exposure may be linked to harmful health effects. The effort to completely phase out PFAS will require broad collaboration and communication across many sectors, including researchers, regulators, and industry. Transitioning to PFAS-free alternatives requires careful evaluation to ensure that the substitutes do not pose new, unforeseen impacts to human health and the environment. In this Science Magazine Perspective, #EPAer Dr. Mohamed Ateia Ibrahim and ETH Zürich’s Dr. Martin Scheringer discuss the unique challenges related to transitioning to PFAS-free alternatives and propose a strategy to move forward ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/dzh9a38i

Summer storms bring lightning ⚡, which can lead to power outages. Always use a generator safely by keeping it outside, away from open doors and windows. Deadly levels of carbon monoxide can build up quickly in enclosed spaces and linger for hours, even after the generator is turned off. 🌩️ For more information on disaster preparedness, including cleanup tips, visit https://lnkd.in/eD5pgNNH
