When historically Black college and university (HBCU) presidents founded UNCF (United Negro College Fund) in 1944, only small numbers of Black students were admitted to predominantly White American colleges and universities. Our founders knew that a college education was important, and they created UNCF to raise dollars to support HBCUs and the hundreds of thousands of students who attended them. For 79 years, UNCF has worked tirelessly to support America’s HBCUs and their students. We have raised over $5 billion and supported more than 500,000 students on their college journeys. HBCUs have built Black America’s middle class, and UNCF scholarships have helped students pay for their college degrees and move upward economically. Along the way, HBCUs and UNCF have urged all American colleges and universities to provide educational opportunity to Black and other students of color. Why? Because we believe that all higher education institutions have an important role to play to ensure equitable educational opportunity for students who, because of race, have been marginalized and excluded. 📢 The Supreme Court's affirmative action ruling will close the door to educational opportunity for many Black students and students of color who want to attend non-HBCUs. With this ruling, more students will turn to HBCUs. America needs HBCUs now more than ever, and UNCF needs all Americans’ support to do our important work. A mind is a terrible thing to waste, but a wonderful thing to invest in.
About us
UNCF (United Negro College Fund) is the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization. During its 80-year existence, UNCF has raised more than $6 billion and helped more than 500,000 students not just attend college, but thrive, graduate and become leaders. To serve youth, the community and the nation, UNCF supports students’ education and development through scholarships and other programs, supports and strengthens its 37 member colleges and universities, and advocates for the importance of minority education and college readiness. While totaling only 3% of all colleges and universities, UNCF institutions and other historically Black colleges and universities are highly effective, awarding 15% of bachelor’s degrees, 5% of master’s degrees, 10% of doctoral degrees and 19% of all STEM degrees earned by Black students in higher education. UNCF administers more than 400 programs, including scholarship, internship and fellowship, mentoring, summer enrichment, and curriculum and faculty development programs. Today, UNCF supports more than 50,000 students at over 1,100 colleges and universities across the country. Its logo features the UNCF torch of leadership in education and its widely recognized trademark, ‟A mind is a terrible thing to waste.”® Learn more at UNCF.org or for continuous updates and news, follow UNCF on Instagram at @UNCF.

This is what it looks like to amplify HBCUs, Black excellence, and impactful organizations in influential spaces. In June, our President and CEO, Dr. Michael Lomax, met with Mike Bloomberg and joined a powerful panel, "Our Legacy: An Exploration of Black Memory and Futurism," to celebrate Juneteenth. Dr. Lomax’s message about the mission and impact of UNCF and HBCUs is needed in spaces like this with media professionals, as we aim to continue telling the narrative of HBCUs. #Bloomberg #UNCF #FBF #HBCUs

In a recent CNN fact check, UNCF Senior Vice President of Public Policy Lodriguez Murray shared crucial insights on the state of HBCUs and government support and funding. "When it comes to HBCUs and the presidency," Murray said, "the book has yet to be finished (on) who will offer the next chapters in terms of HBCU support. That’s what’s on the ballot currently and we want to make sure that whoever wins this race understands what our needs are.” Read the full article and response to CNN's fact check on President Biden and former President Trump's records on HBCUs: https://lnkd.in/e3Hz9BSS #HBCUs #Government #Funding #Support #FactCheck
