It was a great honour to contribute, on behalf of the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub, to the Africa Food Systems Forum ##AFS in #Kigali and present at the opening sessions analysis on #agrifood systems transformation in Africa. The situation in Africa remains grim: 298.4 million people faced hunger in 2023—nearly one out of every five Africans. As we face projections that over half of the world’s chronically undernourished population could be in Africa by 2030, the urgency for action is clear. However, there is also encouraging progress. Across the continent, we’re witnessing a strong response to these challenges: • 49 countries have appointed National Convenors to lead the charge. • 43 national pathways have been developed to drive food systems transformation. • 22 countries have finalized action plans, laying the groundwork for meaningful change. • 70% of countries have established multi-stakeholder and governance mechanisms, ensuring that this transformation is inclusive and effective. These steps forward are a testament to the commitment of Africa to tackle hunger and food insecurity head-on. Guided by the UN Secretary-General’s Call to Action for Accelerated Food Systems Transformation, African governments supported by #FAO, #WFP and #IFAD and the broader #UN system can build resilient agrifood systems and ensure a sustainable, nourished future for Africa.

Exciting update from our #YLPfoodsystems Youth Leadership Programme: YLP alumnus Musa Juwara recently co-facilitated the National Youth Consultation Forum for the Summit of the Future in Banjul, The Gambia, leading discussions with young leaders from across the country on innovation and climate change. Together, the youth produced a powerful position paper addressing key climate challenges and innovative solutions, which will contribute to the youth agenda at the upcoming Summit of the Future in New York. A great example of how our young leaders are coming together to address the world’s most pressing issues. #YouthLeadership #ClimateAction #SDGs

Tackling hunger and climate change cannot happen in silos. We need an interconnected approach to succeed and achieve #SDG2. #COP28 highlighted this by including food systems in its agenda - a big moment. Food systems play a major role in addressing climate change and sustainability challenges on a global scale. Check out the interview to Stefanos Fotiou, Director of the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub ⬇⬇ At the Shamba Centre, we are working to find systemic solutions to make food systems more sustainable. https://lnkd.in/eQgJcsqm

Our #YLPfoodsystems alumnus Isaiah Thomas recently participated in Trinidad and Tobago’s #InternationalYouthDay 2024 Workshop, hosted by the Office of the Parliament, where he delivered powerful insights on the role of youth in sustainable development. Isaiah highlighted that while today's youth may be considered ‘digital natives’, “youth capacity must be built upon and supported through various programs in alignment with sustainable development principles.” He emphasized that “investing in the technological capacity of youth is essential for building sustainable and resilient #FoodSystems that can meet the demands of the future.” Isaiah also underscored the importance of integrating youth into national pathways, ensuring that young leaders are equipped with the tools and support they need to contribute meaningfully to sustainable development. His words remind us that while young people are often at the forefront of innovation, they need robust support systems to truly make an impact. Let’s continue to invest in our youth and empower them to lead in agriculture, environmental practices, and beyond. #YouthLeadership #SustainableDevelopment #SDGs #GlobalGoals
