🌍 Carolina's global partnerships propel transatlantic research 🌍 Recently UNC-Chapel Hill welcomed researchers from a wide array of disciplines across multiple institutions to discuss rapid technological advances and growing concern over shaping today’s media landscape and the potential of misinformation to undermine democracies. The Center for Information, Technology, & Public Life (CITAP) at UNC hosted a two-day workshop entitled “Threats to Democracy: A Transatlantic Workshop on Media and the 2024 Elections.” CITAP partnered with UNC Global Affairs, UNC Center for European Studies, UNC School of Information and Library Science (SILS), and the Thomas Mann House, Los Angeles. 💬 “This workshop was a key opportunity to bring together partners to collaborate on a number of the really big, pressing issues of our time,” Daniel Kreiss said, faculty director and principal investigator at CITAP. The workshop featured two of Carolina's four strategic partner institutions, University of Tuebingen and King's College London, highlighting the strong international research and collaborative links between the universities. Very happy to see the new University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill minor in risk management, a fabulous opportunity for Carolina students and a critical step in building a pipeline of skilled professionals ready to deploy cutting-edge modeling and data science techniques to better understand society’s current and emerging risks. The new Institute for Risk Management and Insurance Innovation (IIRMI) is the leader in this work and UNC Research's newest institute. IIRMI will create the future leaders of the risk management and insurance industry and build a more resilient future.

Carolina was delighted to welcome Jennifer Mulveny '96 back to campus this past Monday. She met with faculty leaders to discuss the future of #AI public policy and ethics, delving into cutting-edge issues such as #deepfakes, data sovereignty and biometrics. Her perspective shed a comparative light on differences in AI policy between Asia-Pacific, Europe and Americas regions. Mulveny also spoke as a guest lecturer for DATA 120: Ethics of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at the invitation of Dr. Neil Gaikwad, where she outlined four principles of investigation on AI: detection, provenance, policy and education. She gave students advice on developing global careers based on her experiences working in public policy for Adobe, Intel Corporation and Hewlett Packard Enterprise, as well as the opportunities and possibilities that her education at Carolina was able to open her mind to, encouraging students to pursue global experiences such as study abroad.

At UNC, teaching a robot to scoop and transport ingredients sparked a vision for the future of lab work. UNC Distinguished Professor Ron Alterovitz and his team are using AI-driven robotics to turn labs into automated discovery hubs, where robots handle precise tasks like needle injections and complex multi-step processes. With defined levels of automation, this work aims to enhance speed, safety, and continuous innovation in fields like chemistry and materials science—ultimately making labs self-driving as they refine materials and molecules with each cycle.
