The National Public Housing Museum is the first cultural institution in the United States dedicated to interpreting the American experience in public housing. Public housing has had an enormous and often controversial impact on our nation’s history. It has shaped our definition of the public good.

Leaving Chicago this morning filled with inspiration after attending the National Public Housing Museum’s inaugural, “A Place to Call Home” gala. Legendary rapper Roxanne Shanté (and former resident of the Queensbridge Houses) emceed our memorable sold-out event at Morgan Manufacturing in Chicago’s West Loop. We had a blast raising funds in anticipation of our long-awaited grand opening and permanent museum home. Congratlations to Lisa Lee and everyone at the National Public Housing Museum team for an outstanding celebration last night. I was happy to break out my late mother’s hat for the fancy occasion. I particularly loved connecting Elevate partners from the Help This Garden Grow podcast with the amazing Zenobia Black. it was great to reconnect with friends like Rufus Williams Jane M. Saks and Heather D. Parish and Teresa Rufaro Prim as well as old colleagues like Cate Cahan from WBEZ.
We're just days away from our A Place to Call Home Gala. We're excited to honor Power of Place awardee, Kimberly Foxx, a former resident of Cabrini-Green Homes and Cook County State’s Attorney. Did you know that we have Kim's oral history recording in our Oral History Archive? In the future, you’ll be able to listen to her memories of growing up in Cabrini-Green Homes on our website, home to the nation’s largest collection of public housing residents’ oral histories! We're thrilled to announce this year's Civic Love & Demand the Impossible Awardees for our A Place to Call Home Gala! Both Mr. Driehaus and the Driehaus Foundation’s early commitment to community empowerment and cultural preservation have made a deeply meaningful impact on our mission and we cannot wait to honor them. Mr. Driehaus and the Driehaus Foundation began funding the museum the year it became incorporated in 2007 and gave general operating support, allowing the museum to grow and adapt. Former Driehaus Foundation Program Officer and friend of the National Public Housing Museum Richard Cahan remembers, “Their support during those first years was essential to keep the fledgling museum operating.”

We’re thrilled to announce this year’s Power of Place awardee, Kimberly Foxx, former resident of Cabrini-Green Homes and Cook County State’s Attorney. Kim Foxx is a trailblazing advocate for justice reform, transparency, and equitable public safety in Cook County, and we look forward to honoring her on April 18. In an interview for the Power of Place Project, Kim reflected on her time growing up in Cabrini-Green Homes, “I think of that place, often, particularly in the work that I do, because it was, at the time, symbolic of all of these failures of government that were being pushed as failures of people. We've extended the nationally touring exhibition "Evicted" by two weeks! Inspired by Matthew Desmond’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book "Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City", the exhibition brings visitors into the world of low-income renter eviction. The exhibition challenges visitors to face the enormity of one of 21st-century America’s most devastating problems while providing context for the crisis and a call to action.
