About us
TANGO is a EU-funded project with the overall goal of developing the theoretical foundations and the computational framework for synergistic human-machine decision making, paving the way for the next generation of human-centric AI systems. The potential impact on individuals and society of the TANGO framework will be evaluated on a pool of real-world use cases of extremely high social impact. The success of these case studies will foster the adoption of TANGO as the framework of reference for developing a new generation of synergistic AI systems, and will strengthen the leadership of Europe in human-centric AI. TANGO has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No. 101120763. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or HaDEA. 🏆 TANGO Project partner Swansea University / Prifysgol Abertawe wins Best Paper Award at #ECSCW! We’re delighted to celebrate our colleagues at Swansea University / Prifysgol Abertawe who, alongside collaborators from the #UKhealthservice and researchers in Italy, have won the #DavidBMartinPrize for #BestPaper at the #EuropeanComputerSupportedCooperativeWork conference. The award-winning paper, led by #BenWilson with senior colleague Matt Roach, tackles one of #healthcare’s biggest #challenges: the #AIchasm between high #AIperformance in #controlledtests and real world #clinicalimpact. By grounding their work in the rich socio-technical tradition (inspired by Suchman, Dourish, Winograd & Flores, and Weiser), the team argues for early, frequent, and workflow-embedded #evaluation of #AIsystems, ensuring they fit the realities of “work-as-done” rather than abstract models. A highlight of the research is the introduction of eight #contextualdimensions, from #controldynamics to #informationaloverlap, offering a fine-grained #operationalframework for designing #hybridhumanAI #decisionsystems. This is not just an advance for #clinicalAI; it’s a valuable contribution to the broader field of #humanAIcollaboration, moving beyond standard #performancemetrics to the nuanced realities of deployment in complex environments. The award was presented on 3 July by #JackiONeil of #MicrosoftResearch, recognising its #multidisciplinaryimpact on understanding society and work. 📄 Read the paper here: “Dimensions of Human-Machine Combination: Prompting the Development of Deployable Intelligent Decision Systems for Situated Clinical Contexts” Ben Wilson, Chiara Natali, Matt Roach, Darren Scott, Alma Rahat, David Rawlinson & Federico Cabitza Computer Supported Cooperative Work, 14 April 2025 https://lnkd.in/eCbe6jyy #HumanAI #ClinicalAI #HybridDecisionMaking #TangoProject #ECSCW #SocioTechnical #HealthcareInnovation

📝New TANGO Project Blogpost! We are excited to share our newest contribution from CEPS (Centre for European Policy Studies): "Ethical AI in Surgery: Policy Lessons from the ALTAI Framework Implementation" In TANGO, we are working on the topic of integrating AI into surgical decision-making; this blog piece focuses on how to do so ethically, ensuring AI systems align with healthcare values, by using the ALTAI framework, a tool developed by the EU to assess AI systems. Among the key points, the article focuses on: ✅The risks over transparency and the need for explainability standards; ✅The legal responsibility issues over Human-AI co-decision making; ✅The need for ongoing assessment over the use of ethical AI; ✅The inclusion of ethicists and legal experts in AI governance committees in hospitals. 🔗 Read the full blogpost on our website: https://lnkd.in/e7ErvQaj #TrustInAI #EthicalAI #ResponsibleAI #AIinHealthcare #AIinFinance #EUAI #TANGOProject #HumanCenteredAI #AIRegulation

New TANGO Project Blogpost! 💥📝 We're excited to share the newest contribution from Carr Communications: “Building Trust Through Communication: Overcoming Fear of AI to our monthly updated TANGO Project Blog section. AI is increasingly shaping critical sectors like healthcare and finance, offering powerful tools to support doctors, detect fraud, and improve decision-making. But with these advancements comes a wave of public concern, from fears of data misuse to anxiety about losing the human touch. This blog explores how trust in AI isn’t just about technology, it’s about communication. At the TANGO Project, we believe that helping people understand how and why AI is being used is essential to building confidence and acceptance. Highlights include: ✅ How clear communication can counter fear and misinformation ✅ Why transparency and ethics must be part of the conversation from day one ✅ The importance of involving end-users and professionals in co-developing AI solutions ✅ Why stories often matter more than stats when building trust If we want AI to truly serve society, we must first earn the public’s trust—and that starts with listening, explaining, and engaging. 👉 Read the full post here: https://lnkd.in/eGFc_-Dv #TrustInAI #EthicalAI #ResponsibleAI #AICommunication #DigitalTrust #AIinHealthcare #AIinFinance #EUAI #TANGOProject #CarrCommunications #HumanCenteredAI #AIRegulation #GDPR #EUAIACT

Interview with the TANGO Project coordinator Andrea Passerini! We are thrilled to share an in‑depth interview with Andrea Passerini, Professor at the University of Trento and Coordinator of the TANGO Project, featured in EIT Digital Grow Digital “Beyond the black box” series. Andrea breaks down how to build #AIsystems that are #explainable, #reliable, and deeply human‑centric. 🔍 Key takeaways: What is Trustworthy AI? #AI should go beyond high accuracy, to provide transparency, accountability and clarity on why decisions are made. Saliency maps, for instance, help show which input parts influence outputs. Beware of “right for the wrong reason” Deep models can latch onto misleading correlations. A famous example: a wolf detector that simply learned “snow” = wolf. Real human oversight is critical. The TANGO Project difference: TANGO Project is advancing #interactive, #neurosymbolic and #explainable #AI #solutions that co‑evolve with users. From perinatal care to fairness in academia and banking, we prioritize enhancing human decision‑making, not replacing it. 🎯 Why this matters for us in AI & innovation: As AI becomes integral in critical areas, from health to finance and policy, it’s more important than ever to combine technical rigor and human values. TANGO Project's principles align with the EU’s vision of AI that empowers and respects human agency. A huge thanks to Andrea and the TANGO consortium for steering this vital conversation. 🙌 Read the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/eariguZT

🚨 New Paper Alert 🚨 I'm excited to share our latest work: "MedSyn: Enhancing Diagnostics with Human-AI Collaboration" 🤝🧠💻 Clinical decision-making is rarely straightforward — it's shaped by ambiguity, cognitive biases, and incomplete data. In this work, we present MedSyn, a hybrid human-AI framework enabling multi-turn dialogues between physicians and LLMs to support real-world diagnostic and treatment decisions. Unlike traditional decision-support tools, MedSyn fosters dynamic collaboration, empowering physicians to challenge, question, and refine LLM outputs. Our preliminary experiments show that open-source LLMs are promising physician assistants, and we’re excited to extend this work to real-world clinical settings soon. 📄 Read the preprint: https://lnkd.in/d5nMTqyR Authors: Burcu Sayin, Ipek Baris Schlicht, Ngoc Vo Hong, Sara Allievi, Jacopo Staiano, Pasquale Minervini, PhD and Andrea Passerini #AI #HealthcareAI #LLMs #HumanAICollaboration #MedSyn #ClinicalDecisionMaking #NLP #Preprint TANGO Project
