"The members of Julia Marsh's lab group were like a team from the Marvel Universe: There was Amanda Guan, who’d recently gotten her master’s degree, in a white lab coat, gray turtleneck, and plastic safety goggles that somehow managed to look hip; Joakim Engström, a boisterous Swedish polymer scientist with a bushy mustache and a wool hat; and Matthew Catarino, the Big Plastics escapee, reserved beneath his baseball cap." This one's a special feature for us. The WIRED team has seen Sway through the development of our technology portfolio, from Firstwave™ to TPSea™ to TPSea Flex™. It's been a true delight having Clive Thompson as an interviewer-turned-friend through calls, lab visits, and many emails over the last couple years — thank you for bringing our seaweed solutions to the surface through WIRED's lens. About us
Sway is a cleantech startup scaling seaweed-based, rapidly compostable replacements for plastic, beginning with flexible packaging. Our patented products match the vital performance attributes of conventional plastics and are designed to plug into existing infrastructure, enabling scale and competitive pricing. Unlike plastic, however, our materials are made from an abundant, regenerative resource and decompose into healthy soil after use. In 2023, Sway won first place in the TOM FORD Plastic Innovation Prize. In 2021, Sway also won the Beyond the Bag Challenge sponsored by Closed Loop Partners and a consortium of major retailers. Sway’s solutions have garnered recognition from Vogue, Condé Nast, Forbes, Business Insider, and Fast Company. As a member of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, the Sustainable Ocean Alliance, and 1% for the Planet, Sway is working holistically to scale their product for a thriving, equitable future. Sway is headquartered in the California Bay Area. To learn more, visit swaythefuture.com.

In the latest edition of The Comma, our partner Lonely Whale speaks to Julia Marsh, founder of Sway – a company working on innovative, biodegradable packaging solutions made from seaweed. Not only is seaweed the perfect plastic alternative, with natural polymers that make it durable and flexible, it also boosts ocean health and benefits marine ecosystems. Read the interview with Julia here and watch Seaweed Stories (produced with Lonely Whale) for free on WaterBear.

Did you know that Sway was featured in Scholastic Magainze's Earth Month edition? As a team who grew up in the Scholastic Book Fair era, our team was absolutely giddy about this feature. Sway's communications are often inspired by the most recent packaging policies and scientific research on ocean health – and we choose to distill these findings in a way that’s easy to understand and compelling to consume. As our team likes to say, you shouldn’t need a material science degree to understand why seaweed packaging is cool. The movement for a regenerative materials future and a healthy ocean future needs everybody – 1st and 2nd graders included! Here's to the next generation, who will be building this future with us. We can't wait to hear fond memories years from now, from those who received this edition of Scholastic Magazine.

Imagine a world where new replacements for plastic – inspired by nature, and designed to regenerate – are more than materials. Their sourcing stories, traceability, and end of life support a healthier planet. They enable circularity, the way nature intended. That’s a future to strive for, and the solutions are already within reach 🌱 Together with Lonely Whale, we wrote an article for Economist Impact answering the question, "What will it take to bring new biomaterials to market and accelerate their adoption among brands & corporations?"
