Yes, the collapse of the DC office market continues. While I agree with everything reported by Peter Grant, there are some important nuances to keep in mind. Rising interest rates and obsolete office product are briefly mentioned, but they are actually a massive part of the story. Rising rates crush values. And the new #workplace must be a destination (not an obligation), thereby making old buildings obsolete. However, the #flighttoquality is real. Companies using office space are concentrating at the top end of the office market where vacancy rates are 14% and falling. And the quality of the neighborhood is just as important as the quality of the building, so the #liveworkplay neighborhoods will coalesce office users. Lastly, DC leaders have long talked of diversifying the industries who call DC home.
