As we quickly approach a new year, we’d like to take some time over the next few months to share more about who we are, what we do, and why we do it here at AFWERX! AFWERX serves as the innovation arm of the United States Department of the Air Force, powered by the Air Force Research Laboratory. We bring cutting-edge American ingenuity from small businesses and start-ups to address the most pressing challenges of the DAF. The Innovate to Accelerate (I2A) Expo Day, held in October at THE BR-DGE in El Segundo, California, brought together more than 260 people from the space industry, defense and investment sectors. The event, hosted by SpaceWERX in partnership with New Mexico Tech University and powered by Disruptive Technology Index (DTI), showcased the most recent I2A cohort participants — 29 companies on 32 awards, totaling $60.6 million in government contracts — focused on Alternative Positioning, Navigation and Timing (altPNT), and the Digital Spaceport of the Future. Participants were able to engage with their technical points of contact during one-on-one sessions, as well as network with industry experts, government partners and innovators. The Air Force Materiel Command awarded a record number of Phase III awards in FY24, leveraging the SBIR/STTR portfolio to meet command requirements. 🏆 Phase III AFMC Contracts Awarded in FY24: 260 💲 Total Face Value: Over $1 Billion! 💵 Current Obligations: Nearly $350 Million These SBIR/STTR transitions are a sign we are bolstering our economic and military strength by fostering partnerships with the private sector. DID YOU KNOW ⁉️: The success of our Ventures program is achieved by accelerating the delivery of advanced defense tech solutions through small business engagement? We offer opportunities for small businesses to scale their novel technology with the ultimate goal of transitioning to a Phase III contract with agencies across the United States Department of the Air Force and beyond! This helps Airmen and Guardians de-risk and fill capability gaps to be more efficient and successful in their missions. What is a Phase III contract, and why is it important? ➡️ Phase III refers to work that derives from, extends, or completes an effort made under prior SBIR/STTR funding agreements, but is funded by sources other than the SBIR/STTR program. ➡️ This phase’s purpose is to transition a company’s SBIR/STTR products or services that benefit the Air Force acquisition community or the private sector. ➡️ Once a company has received a Phase I or II award, sole-source Phase III awards may be made to the company since competition requirements were satisfied under Phase I and II. The Phase III vehicle provides a powerful tool to address affordability, innovation and other United States Air Force and United States Space Force strategic objectives.
