CHIPSTART SUPPORTS 11 NEW SEMICONDUCTOR START-UPS WITH £20M IN FUNDING Eleven innovative chip start-ups have joined the government-backed ChipStart incubator program, designed to translate cutting-edge semiconductor research into viable businesses. Launched in October 2023 with £1.3m in funding, ChipStart has secured nearly £20m in commitments from private investors and grants to fuel economic growth. Notable participants include POM Health, which is developing a wearable patch for continuous hormone monitoring, potentially revolutionizing fertility treatments. HeronIC is enhancing AI efficiency with its custom chip design tool. Vaire Computing, a previous cohort member, raised £4.5m to develop ultra-low power chips, potentially enabling smartphones to need charging just once a month. Wave Photonics, another innovator, secured £4.5m for their photonic chips design tool, promising faster speeds and lower power consumption. Minister for Science Patrick Vallance highlighted the critical role of semiconductors in advancing technology across various fields, emphasizing the importance of turning British R&D into commercial successes through initiatives like ChipStart. This program aims to cultivate a robust pipeline of UK semiconductor startups, driving future growth and innovation. Here’s why Lemurian Labs made my list of the Top 13 AI/ML Startups to Bet On Changing the World… Changing the world demands a bold, contrarian approach to challenge norms and inspire new thinking and that requires commitment and courage — two traits Jay Dawani, co-founder and CEO of Lemurian, has in abundance. Jay’s life has never been archetypal. He was programming computers at age 12 and became fascinated with AI at 15 but was unable to find any universities offering courses on it, so he decided to blaze his path by majoring in applied mathematics and vowed to find a way in. In college, he read every paper and book he could about neural networks and sought leaders in the field to learn from them. After graduating, he interned for OpenAI, co-founded an AI startup, and was a Director of AI for a company with ties to NASA. He even authored a highly-regarded book on arithmetic! These experiences gave him an “outsider’s advantage”. The fact that he DIDN’T spend the formative years of his career immersed in chip design gave Jay freedom to explore AI and dive deeper into it than others. That was the genesis for Lemurian Labs. He founded Lemurian in 2020 with fellow nonconformist, Vassil Dimitrov, who was the researcher behind a breakthrough double base number system for VLSI. they believed Von Neumann architecture had outlived its usefulness for the Age of AI and set out to pioneer a new approach. Lemurian built an architecture from first principles using a custom arithmetic of their design. As they gained traction in vision systems for robotics, Jay felt they still needed to set their sights on tackling a much bigger problem: the STAGGERING cost of compute and unsustainable energy consumption driven by training next-gen LLMs. He courageously pivoted Lemurian to building a new type of accelerator that could advance AI and bring down the stratospheric cost of training so companies could actually afford it. He added architects, compiler and software engineers and recently welcomed Christopher Vick as their VP of Engineering to lead the foray. Vick had a successful career in law, THEN went back to earn his EE after realizing the legal field was a zero-sum game. After more than a decade at Qualcomm and seeing how reluctant they were to change, Vick united with Lemurian to help usher in a new paradigm in AI. With the AI Hardware Summit approaching, I wouldn't be surprised to hear about major funding announcements for a couple of the companies featured on my Top 13 list and Lemurian is one that is due. This would inevitably be followed by a blitz of scaling, to capitalize on the advancements they've quietly made over the last 2 years. With the current investment landscape hitting a “fever pitch” of interest in AI, I think the time is right. My recommendation to Lemurian is: keep building with individuals who inherently go AGAINST the grain because that’s been instrumental to your success so far. #semiconductorindustry #artificialintelligence #ai
