We had a terrific week in New York City, exploring and adding perspectives to the state of the industry trends, technology, innovation, and more at the 2024 Beyond Activ Americas Conference! The event coincided with the forthcoming grand opening this fall of the 100th Anytime Fitness club in Mexico. Rodrigo Chavez, president, Anytime Fitness Mexico, joined a panel discussion and spoke to the expansion opportunities he sees ahead for the region, particularly innovation of the member experience through technology while keeping an eye on club fundamentals. Meanwhile, Eric Keller, CFE, our vice president of international support, joined fellow panelists exploring how franchisors, especially small and scaling brands, are finding new avenues of growth and innovation. Rounded out with Andy Wind, CFE and Tony Mitchell, the team engaged attendees interested in the expansion of our portfolio of fitness and wellness brands across the region. The growing presence of technology partners at traditional industry conferences like Beyond Activ is notable – a clear signal of the continued convergence and member demands for omnichannel, data-driven experiences. English excerpt: ------ Expectations for franchisees and growth in the Japanese style Interview with co-founder of Anytime Fitness, USA Anytime Fitness, a 24-hour gym based in the US, is expanding its store network around the world. As of the end of June, there were about 1,150 stores in Japan, but co-founder Chuck Runyon said in an interview with Nikkei MJ that "there is still room for new stores, and ultimately there is a possibility that the number will exceed 2,000." We asked about the company's future store opening strategy and outlook for the fitness market. --Anytime Fitness has been around for about 20 years, and has expanded to over 5,000 stores around the world. What do you think are the strengths of the brand? "It is characterized by its simplicity, which allows it to be managed by machine 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (entrance and exit, remote monitoring, etc.). It has also developed an IT (information technology) infrastructure for communication with members and management of staff. Owners can operate stores at low cost without needing many people for management." "Once you become a member, you can use any store anywhere in the world. As the number of stores increases, convenience increases, creating a positive cycle that leads to the acquisition of new members." --What do you think about the fitness market environment in Japan? "The global wellness market is expected to grow significantly in the future. Many people want to feel happier (through exercise). The market is also growing in Japan, and there is room to open more gyms and studios. I think that the number of (Anytime Fitness) stores in Japan will eventually exceed 2,000." --Fast Fitness Japan (FFJ), which operates Anytime Fitness in Japan, has acquired master franchise rights in Germany. What do you expect from FFJ? "They have created a system that allows franchisees (affiliated stores) to increase profits, and they have been able to grow together. Their execution is world-class, and other countries are learning a lot from Japan's efforts. In recognition of their track record so far, I proposed that FFJ be entrusted with the expansion in Germany as well." "In Germany, the previous master franchisee was not doing well. FFJ has the ability to appoint leaders and organize teams. FFJ has shown that it can take on leadership roles, so we expect it to be successful.
