Second Story transforms the lives of young people by providing safe havens & opportunities for them to grow and thrive.

About us

The vision of Second Story is of a community in which all young people are safe, live in a nurturing environment and have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Founded in 1972 as “Alternative House,” Second Story transforms the lives of children and youth, helping them stay safe, make positive decisions, achieve educational success, and overcome personal crises. We offer children, youth and families hope for brighter futures by providing counseling, shelter and neighborhood-based support. Through our Second Story for Teens in Crisis program, we give safe haven to teens who are homeless, leaving an abusive situation, or experiencing crisis. Through our Second Story for Young Mothers program, we offer a comprehensive program that includes housing, food, clothing, financial advising, and a path to stability for young mothers and their children. Through our Second Story for Homeless Youth program, we offer services and support to enable homeless young people to finish high school, start college, recover from trauma, and enter empowered adulthood. Through Second Story in the Community, we help low-income, disadvantaged youth connect to school and their community. We provide after-school tutoring, meals, learning experiences, and space for computer centers and clinics. We run family resource centers that distribute food, clothing, and other supplies, and link youth and families to financial advising, translation services, and more. We changed our name from "Alternative House" to "Second Story" in early 2017, to help reflect the broad array of programs that we offer. Learn more at www.second-story.org.

Please mark your calendar and help spread the word about our annual fundraiser. It's our only major fundraising event of the year, and it's critical to helping us ensure our programs remain open and running uninterrupted for local youth and families! The passionate, brave youth in our programs inspired this year's theme: Empowered Youth Power Communities. By empowering youth, listening to their perspectives, amplifying their voices, and understanding the value of their experiences, we can better assist communities in overcoming challenges like homelessness, food insecurity, mental health struggles, violence, drugs, and more. Every one of us can play a role. If you'd like to help support the event, contact [email protected].

Our Springfield Safe Youth Project (SSYP) recently took an exciting field trip to Mason Neck State Park! 🌳 Our young people had a fun time with Supervisor Rodney Lusk exploring the park and learning about the different trees, fruits, and leaves in this area. Experiences like these not only connect them with nature but also provide them a break from the personal challenges of their daily lives. Consider learning more about our programs by attending an Open Door information session: https://buff.ly/3AMmeRf

Recently, Second Story’s Youth Council shared their perspectives on the current opioid epidemic through art projects. Their exhibit was on display at Woodrow Wilson Library and caught the attention of local news media. The Youth Council, comprised of courageous seventh- to twelfth-grade student leaders from the Bailey’s Crossroads area, uses their lived experiences to advocate for change in their communities. These young leaders serve as role models for their peers in the Culmore area, where many youth face significant challenges from drugs, gangs, trafficking, and other safety threats. Read more and view some examples of their powerful art in the story linked below:
