About us

For nearly 50 years, SEARHC has provided high-quality healthcare services to the residents of Southeast Alaska. Operating as an independent and nonprofit health Consortium, SEARHC provides a comprehensive range of health-related services, including primary, urgent and specialty medical care, dental services, behavioral health support, wellness programs, optometry services and more. We are dedicated to improving the health, well-being and quality of life for all people in these communities. SEARHC is committed to keeping care closer to home and making advanced medical technologies accessible to all. One of the many ways SEARHC does this is by offering specialty clinics or sending medical specialists to remote communities and facilities to care for patients who cannot travel. Established in 1975, SEARHC is one of the largest Native-run health organizations in the United States. In 1976, SEARHC contracted with the Indian Health Service under the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act to assume management of the Community Health Aide Program. Today, SEARHC has more than 1,700 employees and operates in 27 communities throughout Southeast Alaska, including two Critical Access Hospitals.

  • Our team in Sitka and Juneau provide local, convenient and state-of-the-art cardiac imaging (Echocardiography, Stress Echoes). Echocardiograms are non-invasive ultrasound tests that provide a graphic outline of the heart’s movement, allowing cardiologists to evaluate the heart’s structure, function and blood flow. Our team members are equipped to perform a range of services from routine screenings to complex cardio assessments and we are dedicated to ensuring our patients are receiving the highest quality care.

  • On June 4, a canoe with 16 paddlers from Wrangell, along with at least four more canoes from other communities, arrived in Juneau after embarking on a 150-mile journey for Celebration, the biennial Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian cultural festival. As these paddlers made their way to Juneau, they symbolized the strength and unity of our communities. This year's theme, “Together We Live in Balance,” reminded us that by coming together, we create a healthier, more vibrant future. The diverse group of paddlers, both Native and non-Native, showed that anyone can join this journey, supported by a community that rallies with gear, food and encouragement. From practicing paddling techniques to cooking traditional foods and raising funds, the entire community played a crucial role. Even though not everyone could be in the canoe, everyone's support made this journey possible. Together, we thrive! 🤲💗🌈 #searhc #southeastalaska

  • Thank you, Ketchikan, for the warm welcome. ❤️ Our Behavioral Health team members enjoyed a productive time in Ketchikan last week meeting with community members and partner organizations! Our conversations focused on plans to provide much-needed Substance Use Disorder and Addiction Services in Ketchikan. We were met with gratitude, great questions and insight into Ketchikan's needs. 🌟 Our recruitment efforts are underway to build the best team to light the way to recovery for individuals struggling with addiction. SEARHC is proud to offer a holistic approach to substance use disorder services and this team will work in sync with our other locations across the region. Stay tuned for more opportunities to connect. Interested in joining our team? Visit www.searhc.org/ketchikan.

  • Clean air = clear lungs! 🌞 Break time is the perfect opportunity to reduce your stress levels at work with breathing exercises instead of smoking. 🌿✨ Try Alternate Nostril Breathing: 1️⃣ Place your right thumb on your right nostril and your left ring finger on your left nostril while resting your pointer and middle fingers on your forehead. 2️⃣ Close the right nostril and inhale through the left nostril, then close the left nostril and exhale through the right nostril. 3️⃣ Alternate between each nostril for at least 5 rounds. (Shout out to Alicia Stettler, LCSW, CYT for sharing this technique) Want to quit smoking or vaping? We’re here to help. Comment “ready” and we’ll DM you resources to support your journey to a healthier lifestyle. 💬🚭 Take a step towards a healthier you today! 🌟 #ClearLungs #MentalHealth #BreathingTechniques #QuitSmoking #Help

  • “When I started optometry school, there were only about 25% women in the field, and there were very few American Indians/Alaska Natives. I felt very alone when they released the national demographics. They reported 0% AI/AN students in optometry school. I said, “That can’t be right,” because I am a student. The reply was that there were not enough AI/AN students to be reported with <0.5%. I was very disappointed. I literally didn’t count.” Dr. Pamela Steffes is the SEARHC Clinical Director of Optometry Services. Her mother was a nurse at SEARHC for many years. When Dr. Steffes was in high school, the SEARHC optometrist was a female American Indian provider, Dr. Salisa Williams from Oklahoma. Dr. Williams would continue to be a mentor for Dr. Steffes during her time at optometry school. Despite the challenges that education in the Lower 48 brings, Southeast Alaska came together to support Dr. Steffes in her growth through scholarships from Sealaska, Shee Atika, and Sitka Tribe of Alaska as well as encouragement from family, friends, elders and former teachers. “No two days are ever the same, but each day is rewarding. It’s such a gift to work with our patients and help them understand the importance of eye health and enable them to see to their best potential.” Thank you, Dr. Steffes, for the work you have done and the work you continue to do!
