📢Today in Science Magazine! New research from DSE & Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory finds that four global policies could eliminate more than 90% of plastic waste & 30% of linked carbon emissions by 2050. 💡 Explore our findings and vision for action: https://lnkd.in/gnhxKb47 The timing is critical: in just two weeks global decision makers & UNEP will meet to finalize the first-ever international legally binding treaty on plastic pollution. Our research shows it’s possible to nearly END global plastic pollution if policymakers take action. Thank you DSE team authors Sam Pottinger, Ciera Martinez, PhD, Magali de Bruyn, and Carl Boettiger alongside our team of experts at UCSB including Neil Nathan, Molly Morse, and more! #INC5 #PlasticsTreaty #EndPlasticPollution

Data-enabled solutions to our most pressing environmental challenges
About us
Launched in 2022, the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center for Data Science and Environment (DSE) is a partnership between UC Berkeley's Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management and the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society, with the financial support of Eric and Wendy Schmidt. The DSE combines the power of computing and environmental science with open science principles and a commitment to inclusivity—all towards the purpose of building tangible, replicable, and accessible solutions to problems compromising the health of our environment. We aim to co-create these solutions in direct partnership with those who hold the knowledge and expertise of their local needs and environmental context.

This week (August 5-14), representatives from the United Nations will begin final negotiations to establish a global treaty on plastic pollution. While there are many pathways to reducing global plastic pollution, DSE & Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory are revisiting our recent findings that revealed a package of four key policies—working together across the entire plastic lifecycle—could nearly end plastic pollution. By 2050 this policy package would: ♻️ Reduce mismanaged plastic waste by up to 91%, AND 🌞 Cut associated greenhouse gasses by 1/3 Our interactive simulation projects annual global plastic pollution that will be generated in 2050 under different scenarios, piled on top of Manhattan for scale. Left: If no action is taken, the annual plastic pollution generated in 2050 would be nearly double - growing to 121 million metric tons. Right: Under a high ambition treaty, the annual plastic pollution generated in 2050 could be cut by more than 90% - dropping down to 10.8 million metric tons. 🎉 Congrats to Lucia Layritz, DSE postdoctoral researcher, for her new research in Biogeosciences that examines how climate change and increasing disturbances, like wildfires, are impacting the future of boreal forests. Lucia completed this research as part of her dissertation at the School of Life Science, Technical University of Munich. Boreal forests span North America, Europe, and Asia, and are characterized by cold-tolerant coniferous forests. Lucia’s study explores how these forests, currently dominated by spruces and pines, are changing over time. For example, Lucia found that: 🌲 Warming effects can lead to denser forests. 🌲Disturbances (like fires) reduce tree cover in favor of shrubs and grasses. 🌲Together, warming temperatures and disturbances can lead to a reduction of coniferous trees, and a consequent expansion of deciduous varieties. Congrats to Dr. Kristin Davis, a postdoc on our team, who is the lead author of new paper that found Eastern screech-owls are responding to their environment in the Fort Collins, CO area in unexpected ways. 🦉 Screech-owls are small and adorable (we're biased!) birds that are relatively common in eastern North America, but are understudied by scientists in the portion of their range where Ft. Collins is located. Key among Kristin's findings: screech-owls were more likely to colonize some riparian areas (the lands along a major river in town) but less likely to persist there over time. Kristin and co-authors Rob Sparks, Abigail Feuka, and Dr. Liba Pejchar hope the findings will support local habitat management.
