A nice somewhat positive Sunday read with the following highlights (let’s hope this will be the case with the AI trend): “The energy transition will be much cheaper than you think - Most analysts overestimate energy demand and underestimate technological advances. The one point of agreement, that decarbonisation will be dauntingly expensive, between climate activists and carbon addicts is, in fact, wrong. Greening the world economy will be much cheaper than the two groups imagine. Slower economic growth, cheaper technology and more modest targets for when the world reaches net zero could reduce the price tag even further. This year solar power should account for $500bn, more than every other source of generation combined. These numbers flatter clean energy somewhat, since they include investments in electric vehicles (EVs), heat pumps and improvements to electric grids, which do not in themselves lower emissions that much. Instead, they pave the way for big emissions cuts, provided that the electricity used comes from low-carbon sources.”

“Right now, too many data points are being requested by too many different stakeholders, and sooner or later, this will need to be streamlined and reduced. We’re seeing a phase of over-correction, but eventually, the focus will shift to the ESG KPIs that truly matter. Our goal is to decrease the energy usage and carbon emissions of our buildings and to create sustainable investment strategies. In the last 2 years, we have worked hard to collect the energy usage data automatically, by connecting the smart meters in the buildings via national platforms to our Scaler energy management system. To create an industry standard for ESG reporting, we have contributed to the realisation of the ESG SDDS of INREV. With an automated report from Scaler, we can now easily communicate our ESG data to our investors. A big thank you to INREV and Scaler for initiating and facilitating this. With streamlined and automated reporting, we can focus more on improving the buildings. And that is where it's all about.

Starting your ESG data collection journey? My biggest piece of advice is simple: leverage the resources already available in the industry. The ESG landscape is complex, with multiple reporting frameworks, varied data requirements, and definitions that can quickly feel overwhelming. Instead of starting from scratch, use existing resources and platforms that can lay out the puzzle pieces for you. A good ESG platform (obviously, I'm biased) will have already documented data variables for each report, making your start smoother and your path forward clearer. With these tools in place, your team stays engaged, and you avoid unnecessary reinvention along the way. The goal is to focus on what matters—driving impact—rather than on the mechanics of data management. If you’re embarking on this journey, don’t hesitate to explore the tools available. Getting the fundamentals right from day one will set you up for ESG success.
