Today, July 26, marks the 34th anniversary of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA): the landmark civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability, passed in 1990. From its inceptions SamTrans has kept accessibility central to its mission, offering paratransit services since the summer of 1976, 14 years before the passage of the ADA. Before SamTrans bus service began, SamTrans purchased three wheelchair lift systems and three used buses. SamTrans made it a priority to build transportation options for people with disabilities before it was legally required, and before there were commonplace guidelines on how to do so. Since then, SamTrans has provided 9.5 million ADA paratransit trips. The Bay Area has a rich disability history, and SamTrans is honored to share a piece of that. Thank you American Public Transportation Association for inviting me and San Mateo County Transit District Vice Chair Jeff Gee to speak at the Transit Board Members Seminar in San Jose this past weekend. We had a great panel to discuss what it takes to develop an effective transit board member and CEO partnership. Monterey Salinas Transit, Jacksonville Transportation Authority and Capital Metropolitan Authority CEOs and Board Chairs were also on the panel.
