We lost William Anders in a plane crash Friday. My condolences to his family, the Apollo team, and our greater NASA family. I remember well my experience working on Astromag, a proposed super magnet facility on the Space Station Freedom. I was asked to have an someone at Johnson in the Astronaut Office review the safety approach. He had just lost his fellow crew member, and best friend the day before in a crash the day before. I asked if he wanted to reschedule and he said no but apologized for being distracted. What a professional. It was a difficult experience for him and we got through it with all expectations met. He was a veteran on Shuttle missions. I was 28. The pain felt in by that small is deep and we will never be able to understand it. Rest in Peace, sir.

My parents gave up all their riches and inheritance to be Americans and start from scratch. My dad first came here to get his second masters and doctorate at Indiana and Indiana State University teaching the next class of American public school teachers which most of us on here experienced with leading us to our successes. My dad wore a flag pin all week after getting is citizenship SO DAMN PROUD TO BE A US CITIZEN the hard way and the right way. Thank you teachers in my birthplace of New Orleans, Louisiana at my local public schools: Bienville, Osborne, McD 39, Livingston, and Ben Franklin HS. I remember the days of my parents and brother living happily in two and three bedroom rental apartments and a duplex with them finally buying a small 3 bedroom house. We felt played every sport, earned Eagle scout, and went on to lead successful lives. My parents achieved their dream house in their later years. I believe every class MUST begin with with the Pledge every day. Each child should be taught to say it strongly and loudly (like we were taught). Many people have died and sacrificed their children to give you the right to stay silent, burn it, display it upside down, and kneel during the anthem. So what? God have is the right to kill as well. Our Founders were very clear on the subject: rights only come with responsibility. Most of America believes these flag desecration to be a disgrace. Most Americans had good public school teachers who taught us to respect the flag. Do you pledge allegiance to the Flag, the Constitution, the rights of other citizens, and to keep your responsibilities? Most of us have. Most of our politicians have not. There is a reason most of us weep during the national anthem-even football players who may have lived a life of injustice in their local or state “system” prior to a game. It’s right there on TV. It started in that little classroom that most of your attended in the public education system: respect for the greatest invention by humankind: The American Constitution, represented by the Star Spangled Banner.
