Transit is the Answer.
About us
The Regional Transportation Authority (a.k.a. RTA) was created in 1974. In 1983, the amended Act created three "service boards" known as the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Metra commuter rail and Pace suburban bus. The RTA's primary responsibilities became financial and budget oversight of CTA, Metra and Pace, and regional transit planning issues. Guiding the RTA's oversight responsibility is a Board of Directors who approves an annual budget and two-year financial plan. The Board consists of 15 members and a chairman appointed from the six-county region. The RTA Board is also required annually to review and approve a five-year capital plan, which is a blueprint of the capital activities to be funded by the RTA and executed by the CTA, Metra, and Pace.

Earlier this week the RTA's Director of Communications, Tina Fassett Smith, presented at the U.S. Department of Transportation public engagement workshop on the Transit is the Answer Coalition. Since Transit is the Answer was adopted in 2023, coalition members have provided critical input on two pilot programs - Access and Station Activations - that have launched this year. This week, the coalition met again to discuss governance reforms meant to improve the system for all riders. We were thrilled to share all we've learned about co-creating and developing policy with advocates, riders and community leaders with this group! In honor of Disability Pride Month, the RTA emphasizes its commitment to improving and expanding accessible public transportation to all region-wide, and celebrates the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). For many in our region with disabilities that prevent them from using fixed-route transit, the ADA Paratransit service has been a lifeline. Read about our rider's personal experiences using Paratransit in our blog: https://lnkd.in/gSPkdRqz #ADAanniversary #DisabilityPrideMonth #publictransit #transportation #chicago

Buses connect our neighborhoods and communities equitably and serve as a lifeline for millions of residents. Compared with peer regions, the Chicago region dedicates very little roadway space for public transit. Transit agencies serving cities like Los Angeles, Seattle, Miami, Minneapolis, Houston, and Phoenix all have over 100 miles of transit-only or transit-priority roadway lanes. Chicago has less than 15 lane miles in this category. Our bus riders deserve better, and the RTA is excited to see a City Council committee hearing for advancing Western Avenue BRT. Western Avenue is one of the busiest bus corridors in the Chicago region, with more than 20,000 rides per weekday and connections to four Chicago Transit Authority rail lines and one Metra Commuter Rail line. These riders deserve fast and reliable service on their way to work, school, healthcare centers, and visits with family and friends. Building BRT on Western is an efficient way to upgrade service, boost the local economy, and improve quality of life in surrounding neighborhoods. The RTA commends many area aldermen for their interest in and support for Western Avenue BRT and we look forward to Chicago Department of Transportation and CTA discussing the future of this project with the council committee members. 🚇 #urbanplanning #publictransit #transportation #busrapidtransit #chicago
