If I have an injured ankle and I'm limping, everyone acknowledges I'm hurt. I'd feel comfortable saying, "My ankle hurts. I need help." But with behavioral health? It's so different. If I'm depressed, anxious, or think I might have a drinking problem, there's a completely different level of comfort in talking about it. People suffer in silence. They don't share. There’s still a huge stigma. That's why we started our business with an emphasis on search engine optimization. So many people search online for help because they don't know where to go. They don't have a friend or confidant they feel comfortable talking to. But that online search can lead to dangerous places. People can be misinformed. They might click on a paid ad purchased by the highest bidder — not necessarily the best match for them. At Recovery.com, we're trying to change this. We're working to help people find, maintain, and strengthen their recovery. And crucially, we're focusing on helping people earlier. The sooner we can intervene, the more lives we can change.

Today, on Overdose Awareness Day, we pause to remember and honor those we have lost to drug overdoses. Let's take a moment to reflect on the urgent need for compassionate care and innovative solutions in addiction treatment. As we mark this solemn day, let’s also foster hope and commitment towards change. We can talk openly about the challenges and stigmas associated with addiction. Let’s pledge to enhance access to preventive measures, support recovery, and invest in education that can save lives before they are lost. Overdose Awareness Day is about more than just remembrance—it's about taking action. Here’s how you can help: -Carry Naloxone: Equip yourself with naloxone, a life-saving medication that can reverse an overdose. -Support Local Organizations: Donate to or volunteer with local harm reduction programs or recovery centers. -Advocate: Write to your representatives to support policies that expand access to treatment and harm reduction services. -Educate Others: Share information about overdose prevention, signs, and how to help someone in crisis. -Be a Listening Ear: Reach out to someone struggling with addiction, let them know they are not alone. Join us in spreading awareness and making a difference in our communities. Share this post, start a conversation, and be part of the change.💜 #OverdoseAwarenessDay #SpreadAwareness #EndOverdose #TogetherWeCan #AdvocateForChange #SupportRecovery

“Look out, here we come.” - Tom Farley, the newest member of the Recovery.com team. Madison native Tom Farley is a long-time advocate for recovery after he and his brother Chris struggled with addiction, a family disease as deep-set as their community ties and penchant for making others laugh. Tom authored the New York Times bestseller The Chris Farley Show and speaks nationwide to advocate for recovery. We’re excited to see how Tom’s lived and learned experiences will further our mission and help everyone—parents, siblings, friends, patients, loved ones—find hope.

In the recovery industry, this statistic really bothers me: It takes an average of 11 years from the first episode of a behavioral health issue — whether it's a blackout, a panic attack, or a bout of mania — for people to get professional, clinical help. For me, it was 34 years. I got sober at 47. There's a dangerous and misleading philosophy that we have to wait until people hit their bottom. But those bottoms can get very, very low. We're talking about children without parents, incarceration, and death. Sometimes those low moments lead to awareness and change. But why wait? I think with good awareness and education, we can identify this disease earlier. We can intervene sooner.  Imagine if we could change that 11-year average to 10. Or 9. Or 8. Or 7. → How many lives would be saved? → How many relationships would be impacted in a positive way? → How many families would stay intact? → How many careers would flourish instead of falter? We don't have to wait for rock bottom. We can start the conversation now. We can educate. We can intervene. Because every year we shave off that average is a year of life restored. A year of potential unlocked. A year of relationships mended. Let's not wait for the bottom.

    CEO & Co-Founder, Recovery.com | 🏳️🌈

We're building technology to help people find behavioral health treatment. But here's something I've learned as a founder: You can't truly understand the impact of what you're doing from behind a computer screen. You have to get out there. You have to talk to people in recovery. You have to visit treatment centers. One of the main reasons Jeremiah and I fell in love with this space was meeting so many incredible people in recovery. Often, they're working at these treatment centers, dedicating their lives to helping others find the path they found. Rubbing shoulders with them is inspiring. But it also drives home the urgency of our mission. When you hear their stories — the struggles, the triumphs, the near-misses — you realize just how critical it is to make treatment more accessible. That's why, as we've grown, we've really benefited from hiring people who are in active recovery. These team members bring a level of empathy, understanding, and insight that you simply can't get any other way. They keep us grounded in the reality of recovery and continually remind us of the lives we're working to impact. Thank you Cliff McDonald, Jaco Coetzee LCPC, Amanda Uphoff, Patrick Chapin and others for keeping us grounded!
