We had the opportunity to interview Prof. Chris Elliott at the Recent Advances in Food Analysis (RAFA 2024) event in Prague. In this discussion, our Editor-in-Chief Maurizio Paleologo Oriundi delves into Prof. Elliott’s recent presentation on the vital role of analytical chemistry in verifying the origin of soya to fight deforestation. With the Deforestation EU rule set to take effect in the coming year, food processors and traders will face new challenges in proving that their products do not come from deforested areas. Prof. Elliott also shared insights on how similar methodologies will be used for other commodities, such as coffee. This conversation highlights the critical link between food quality and sustainability, paving the way for responsible sourcing practices. Be sure to check out the full interview for more on this pressing topic! Follow the link in the first comment below 👇 #sustainability #foodindustry #analyticalchemistry

Lidija Kenjeric from the University of Natural Resource and Life Sciences, Austria, gave a talk at RAFA 2024 entitled: “Exploring Mass Spectrometer Limits: UHPLC–MS/MS Method for Determination of 1000 Toxins in 10 Minutes.”.Kenjeric presented a validated method that quantifies over 1000 fungal metabolites and plant toxins in a 40-min window, using both positive and negative ionization modes with two injections of 20 min each. By applying fast polarity switching (FPSW) with scheduled multiple reaction monitoring (sMRM), her team tested nine different configurations of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and ultrahigh pressure liquid chromatography (UHPLC) columns to assess how an accelerated method might impact performance without losing accuracy or precision. Using samples of oats and muesli, the validation, based on SANTE guidelines, examined repeatability, precision, matrix effects, and recovery rates across different concentration levels. Results indicated FPSW maintains matrix effect stability and preserves precision; however, a fast UHPLC-gradient compromised data quality at lower concentration levels, highlighting challenges in achieving speed without sacrificing sensitivity. Great session on food contamination analysis at RAFA 2024 started with a talk by Stefan van Leeuwen from Wageningen University & Research), The Netherlands, entitled: “The Knowns and Unknowns: The Analytical Toolbox to Tackle the PFAS Challenge."Van Leeuwen highlighted the critical need to address the problem of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination. His presentation described an advanced analytical toolkit developed at WFSR and focused on three main approaches: mass balance analysis to determine the total PFAS content, ultra-sensitive targeted detection for specific PFAS at low levels, and the identification of previously unknown PFAS compounds. Van Leeuwen highlighted that high-resolution mass spectrometry using an orbital ion trap mass spectrometer applied to freshwater fish samples revealed that over half of the organic fluorine content could not be attributed to known PFAS, indicating unidentified compounds. This toolkit included sophisticated data acquisition and filtering tools to provide a comprehensive framework for analyzing PFAS in food matrices to help address future analytical challenges in PFAS research, according to Van Leuwen.
