NEW from the Pollinator Partnership Blog: An interview with Anya Peters, Pollinator Steward Certified This year, more than 1,000 people participated in our Pollinator Steward Certification (PSC), gaining scientific knowledge to support pollinators, people, and the planet. From February to April, nine live sessions covered topics like pollinator habitats and thriving strategies. Participants are now applying their knowledge to improve pollinator habitats and engage in community outreach. We interviewed Anya Peters, a recent Certified Pollinator Steward, about her experience and conservation efforts. The latest NAPPC Conservation Spotlight article from the Pollinator Communications Task Force shines on Dr. Kristen Lear and the Agave Restoration Initiative of Bat Conservation International. This initiative is a bi-national collaboration of diverse partners that works across the Southwest U.S. and Mexico to save threatened and endangered pollinating bats, restore agave corridors, and support communities in sustainable agricultural and business practices. "I wish more people knew about the importance of bats for pollination! Bat pollinators often don’t get the recognition they deserve. Nectar-feeding bats often spread more pollen than insect pollinators or hummingbirds, and often spread this pollen over much farther distances, making them some of the most effective pollinators of more than 300 plants worldwide, including agaves. By protecting pollinating bats like the Mexican long-nosed bat, we’re protecting these important plants." To celebrate the upcoming North American Pollinator Protection Campaign (NAPPC) award season, we have revisited some of last year’s awardees and checked in on their lives now that their pollinator projects have wrapped up. “Since receiving the 2023 Pollinator Advocate Award, I presented my study at the 2023 MILSET Expo International Science Fair in Mexico as a member of Team Canada and was honoured with the 2023 Nature Inspiration Award (Youth Category) from the Canadian Museum of Nature. Going batty for Pollinator Week? 🦇 The work of pollinators is key in providing humans one out of every three bites of food and sustaining the reproduction of plant material (such as seeds and berries) required by other wildlife. Bats work the night shift 🌛, feeding on flower nectar and getting pollen all over their faces and bodies in the process. These nocturnal pals play a part in cross-pollination by moving to the next flower and depositing pollen. Bats are just as important as the day shift birds and bees that feed on daytime flowering plants. EPA conducts research and develops methods, tools, and models to better understand the effects of pesticides on the health of pollinators.
