📅 One year ago today, our team started a petition on behalf of the Māori people to grant whales legal personhood and designate them as ocean ambassadors. Today is #WorldRiversDay!🌊 World Rivers Day is a celebration of the world’s waterways, marking the crucial role they play in sustaining life as we know it. Rivers are important for many reasons. One of the most important things they do is carry large quantities of water from the land to the ocean, playing a key role in the water cycle. Nearly all rivers flow into the ocean, meaning how we treat our rivers is how we treat our oceans. 📍 In 1994, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed September 16th the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the date of the signing, in 1987, of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. 🌎 The ozone layer covers the entire planet and protects life on earth by absorbing harmful ultraviolet-B radiation from the sun. Without it, life on earth would not be possible! ❗ Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other hazardous chemicals are released when plastic is burned, which can harm the ozone layer.
