What’s under the grass at SMU? An earthquake detection system and more. Below the well-groomed lawns and red brick buildings are thousands of unused fiber optic cable (dark fiber) that have been transformed into seismic sensors to detect vibrations.   Working with #SMU’s Office of Information Technology, professor Stephen Arrowsmith and postdoctoral fellow Jyoti Sharma are collecting data that shows when a fiber is compressed due to earthquake-driven shaking or small vibrations created by everyday traffic.    Arrowsmith sees DAS not as a replacement for traditional seismometers but as a valuable complement.   https://lnkd.in/gsQ89K-e #earthquakes #earthquakedetection #earthsciences

Geohazard monitoring with fiber optic sensors is now becoming routine in multiple seismic observatories. Our OptaSense and Silixa #DAS architectures are actively being used for permanent monitoring in various #earthquake, #volcanic and induced seismicity settings. Our Technical Director J. Andres Chavarria will be hosting the workshop on “Fiber Optic Sensing in Geoscience and Seismology” during the upcoming IUGG/IASPEI Assembly of the Latin American and Caribbean Seismological Commission. He will cover various aspects of #fiber optic technology and its applications including early warning systems, earth imaging, and near surface geohazards.
