About us
Now in its sixth decade of practice, Olson Kundig is a collaborative design practice led by 13 principal/owners whose work includes cultural and museum projects, exhibition design, commercial and mixed-use design (including wineries and sports facilities), private and multi-family residential, hospitality projects, places of worship, interior design, product design and landscape design. With deep roots in the Pacific Northwest, the firm and its team of over 350 work with clients around the world. The firm began its creative existence in 1966 with the architect Jim Olson, whose work at that time centered on explorations of the relationship between dwellings and the landscapes in which they inhabit. Olson started the firm based on the essential ideas that buildings can serve as a bridge between nature, culture, histories, and people, and that inspiring surroundings have a positive effect on people’s lives. Among the firm’s accolades are the 2009 National AIA Architecture Firm Award (as Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects), national and regional design awards from the American Institute of Architects, Jim Olson’s 2007 Seattle Medal of Honor and Tom Kundig’s National Design Award from the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt and his Academy Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Books on the firm’s work include Tom Kundig: Working Title (Princeton Architectural Press, 2020); Jim Olson: Building • Nature • Art (Thames & Hudson, 2018); Tom Kundig: Works (Princeton Architectural Press, 2015); Jim Olson: Art and Architecture (August Editions, 2013); Tom Kundig: Houses 2 (Princeton Architectural Press, 2011); Jim Olson Houses (The Monacelli Press, 2009); and Tom Kundig: Houses (Princeton Architectural Press, originally published in 2006 and re-released in 2021).

Olson Kundig is pleased to announce the elevation of Principal Mark Olthoff, AIA, LEED AP, to the firm's ownership group as Principal/Owner. Mark joins the firm’s 12 existing owners—Tom Kundig, Kirsten Ring Murray FAIA, Alan Maskin, Kevin Kudo-King, AIA, LEED AP, Hemanshu Parwani "HP", Steven Rainville, AIA, LEED AP, Marlene Chen, Edward Lalonde, Blair Payson, Daniel Ralls, Jamie Slagel, AIA, and Ming-Lee Yuan, AIA, NOMA—and principal/founder Jim Olson. This expansion of the ownership group will strengthen Olson Kundig’s commitment to strategic talent management and a multi-generational practice, enriching its creative vision and driving the delivery of exceptional, client-centered projects. Mark Olthoff, AIA, LEED, AP, is an explorer in both life and his approach to designing a wide range of building types. His work is rooted in residential architecture and attention to client service, with a portfolio spanning houses, cabins, hospitality, commercial, workplace, and cultural projects. Inspired by cultural exchange, he is adept at working in diverse environments and locations worldwide. Mark’s design process embraces experimentation and risk, with the goal of revealing a project’s defining essence. He is driven to explore the edges and to uncover the uniqueness of every project, crafting sensible design solutions where perceived simplicity belies a deeper complexity of collaboration, process, and poetry. Mark is primarily based in the New York City office and maintains a regular presence in the Seattle office. “Mark has been contributing to Olson Kundig’s work for 21 years,” shared Principal/Owner Kevin M. Kudo-King. “He is a talented and sensitive designer who seeks to create site-specific architecture that is unique to each client. We are lucky to welcome Mark as a fellow Owner and to work alongside him as he makes our work and culture better.” Visit the link below to learn more! https://lnkd.in/g9jyBQpn #Architecture #News
