Excited to see what's happening in the Grid Modernization Initiative. This effort cuts across many U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) offices as it works to ensure our future power grid can meet growing demand while remaining safe, clean and resilient.

Yesterday, Under Secretary Richmond enjoyed speaking at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development 2024 Innovative Housing Showcase at the District Architecture Center! She spoke on the Building Decarbonization and Affordable Efficiency Panel. This is the fourth year of the showcase, which is a public event to raise awareness of innovative and affordable housing designs and technologies that have the potential to increase housing supply, lower the cost of construction, increase energy efficiency and resilience, and reduce housing expenses for owners and renters. This effort aligns with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) #AffordableHomeEnergy #Earthshot goals of reducing the upfront cost of upgrading a home by at least 50% while reducing energy bills by 20% within a decade. Under Secretary Richmond attended the #FloatingOffshoreWind Summit, hosted by U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Department of Commerce, and U.S. Department of Transportation. This summit discussed progress and next steps on the #FloatingOffshoreWind Shot™—an ambitious initiative to drive U.S. leadership in floating offshore wind. Deep-water areas that require floating platforms are home to two-thirds of America’s offshore #windenergy potential—a clean energy resource that is key to meeting the nation’s climate goals. Under Secretary Richmond is excited to speak at the Affordable Home Energy Shot Summit on June 5! U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will virtually convene stakeholders to discuss the Affordable Home Energy Shot™—an ambitious initiative to reduce the upfront cost of upgrading a home by at least 50% while reducing energy bills by 20% within a decade.  Nearly one in four households nationwide experience high energy burdens; as a result, more than 20% fell behind on their energy bills in 2022. These trends disproportionately impact lower-income residents who live in older homes that often lack adequate insulation and energy-efficient appliances. Last week, Under Secretary Richmond joined U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) at the Special Competitive Studies Project - SCSP #AIExpo2024 to speak on a panel about #EnergyEarthshots and share the Department’s goals for the future of #AI technology during a keynote address hosted by NVIDIA.   The Department is pushing into new frontiers on AI, which was on full display at the DOE Pavilion with demonstrations of #AI models developed by DOE and hands-on virtual reality experiences. Plenary talks included discussions about the importance of understanding the benefits and risks to AI technology and using AI tools to advance the nation’s technological competitiveness.  DOE welcomed several visitors to their Pavilion, including U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich! Another great event and fantastic opportunity to discuss the exciting work happening at DOE. 

We have broken the exascale barrier once again! The Aurora supercomputer hosted by Argonne National Laboratory joins Frontier hosted by Oak Ridge National Laboratory to take the top 2 spots on the Top500 list of high performance computers. Last week, Under Secretary Richmond provided a keynote address at the national laboratory-led DICE #DigitalEngineering Conference at Idaho National Laboratory. DOE is doing amazing work in this field and coordinating with interagency partners, academia, and industry to push the frontier of innovation in the digital space.  From digital twins and AI to cyber resilience and instrumentation, DOE is using these technologies to advance our energy and national security missions. Thank you, Idaho National Laboratory, for hosting an amazing conference! #DICE2024

Digital engineering, digital twinning, and AI have the potential to truly change the world. This week many of the DOE, DoD, NASA, and other federal agency laboratories/centers met together at #DICE2024 to collaborate on digital innovation. Keynotes from the Office of the Under Secretary for Science and Innovation, U.S. Department of Energy (Dr. Richmond), Harlan Bowers, Erin Searcy, Jonathan Menard, Laura McGill, Marianne Walck, Candice Ling, & Daniel Hettema set the tone for the transformational role the laboratories can play across science, energy, and security applications for our nation. The national laboratories in collaboration with academic and industrial partners presented over 80 technical presentations across a broad set of domains. These events take months of preparation from a diverse set of laboratories to plan and execute. The event was a great success demonstrating that the national labs do our best work when we work together. My sincere thank you to the #DICE2024 leadership team: Michael Churchill, Casey Noll, Lee Linville, Roberto Ponciroli, Juliane Müller, Anthony Ray Matta, Haoyu Wang, Logan Browning, Abby Todd, Jason St. John, Kelly Rose, John Langford, Michelle Goff, Richard Vilim, Greg Chavez, Roshanda Spillers, Mark White, Kaleb Houck, and many others who spent the last six months working together to build this program. Last week, Under Secretary Richmond had the opportunity to visit Sandia National Laboratories. While there, she learned about some of their latest research in microelectronics, microsystems engineering, and the unique material Gallium Arsenide (GaAs). Visits like these help Department of Energy tap into the important innovation happening at their partner national labs, with their diverse talent pools of world-leading scientific experts working on some of the nation’s biggest challenges.
