About us

To attain its mission, the responsibilities, functions and duties of the New York State Department of Transportation include: ■Coordinating and developing comprehensive transportation policy for the State; coordinating and assisting in the development and operation of transportation facilities and services for highways, railroads, mass transit systems, ports, waterways and aviation facilities; and, formulating and keeping current a long-range, comprehensive statewide master plan for the balanced development of public and private commuter and general transportation facilities. ■Administering a public safety program for railroads and motor carriers engaged in intrastate commerce; directing state regulation of such carriers in matters of rates and service; and, providing oversight in matters relative to the safe operation of bus lines, commuter railroads and subway systems that are publicly subsidized through the Public Transportation Safety Board

  • Big news for the Bronx River Parkway! NYS Governor Kathy Hochul announced the start of a $517.5M project to replace two bridges in the Bronx and create a shared-use path making it easier for pedestrians & cyclists to take a mental health break while seeing and exploring the area. NYSDOT Commissioner Dominguez said, “This project is part of NYS's ongoing commitment to restore its aging infrastructure, creating a more resilient transportation network that connects communities, promotes growth, enhances public safety, and provides access to all users of the system."   • 🌳🚤 NYSDOT Responds: Last week’s severe thunderstorms wreaked havoc on Narrow Island and Green Island on Lake George, toppling dozens of trees and threatening some favorite NY camping spots. But when the DEC put out the call for help, NYSDOT answered with tree crews loading into boats to keep the popular camping spots open and safe. A huge shoutout to our dedicated teams all across the state who are always ready to step up and keep NY moving, no matter what Mother Nature throws our way. New bridge decks, road surfaces, and concrete repairs will enhance safety and resilience along vital travel corridors.
