NYLAG’s LGBTQ Law Unit responds directly to how our clients’ sexual and gender identities intersect with other economic, racial, and social injustices in addressing their legal needs. Through a combination of direct legal services, community outreach and education, and policy advocacy, the LGBTQ Law Unit continues to fight for the protection of LGBTQ+ rights and the advancement of LGBTQ equality. Thanks to Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP’s long-term commitment to NYLAG’s mission, the LGBTQ Law Unit continues to expand its services and impact. Together, we work every day to pursue a vision of inclusion, equity, and justice.  

Obtaining immigration status comes with significant obstacles as it is, and circumstances like having prior deportation orders only make it more challenging as individuals must pursue other paths outside of asylum, notably with higher standards. Last year, NYCHA released its new Admissions and Continued Occupancy Plan (ACOP) for public notice and comment, marking a significant step toward transparency in the public housing program’s governing policies. Since then, NYLAG's Public Housing Justice Project (PHJP) has partnered with Center for Justice Innovation, RedHook Justice and other organizations in Red Hook to raise awareness and help community members learn about accessing the ACOP site and NYLAG’s PHJP hotline. #IntimatePartnerViolence does not discriminate, but LGBTQ survivors still face doubt and biases around their experiences from those meant to help, which reinforces barriers for LGBTQ survivors to access justice and other services. It’s on all of us as advocates to know the difference between myth and fact, and to ensure that LGBTQ survivors get the validation, support, and services every survivor deserves.

The earlier children receive the special education interventions they need, the better the outcomes for their development and their families' overall stability. This is especially true for children from lower income households. Without full funding for 3-K, Pre-K, and preschool special education services, lower income children and families have the most to lose and face the steepest climb to access the support they need to thrive – support to which they are legally entitled.

Juneteenth is both a celebration of hope and liberation, and also an important reminder of our country’s foundations in injustice and dehumanization. So much of the injustice we see every day in our work has roots in the same anti-Black racism that led to the abhorrent legacy of slavery, and the subsequent resounding inequities persist across our institutions. As we commemorate Juneteenth, we simultaneously celebrate liberation and recognize that the fight for racial justice, inextricably connected to social and economic justice, is far from over. 🖤 ❤️ 💚
