This summer has been one of the hottest on record in New York, putting NYC's power grid to the test. As temperatures soared in July, NineDot Energy's batteries powered on to provide relief to the overstressed grid. We’re excited to share a new blog post by Rebecca S., Senior Manager of Data Analytics, and Adam Cohen, CTO & co-founder, that explores how our energy storage systems made a real difference during the July heat waves. Becca and Adam take us from the summer of 1964, when New York’s power plants were pushed to their limits, to today’s clean energy solutions. They highlight how our first Bronx battery project not only helped reduce emissions but also played a part in easing the strain on an aging grid. This marks one of the first times that real-world data from an actual working battery in NYC has been released, offering valuable insights into its performance — read more and discover why building more energy storage across the city is so essential for New York’s clean energy transition, and why Bronx Borough President Hon. Vanessa L. Gibson, MPA (She, Her, Hers, Ella), New York League of Conservation Voters President Julie Tighe, Mayor’s Office of Climate & Environmental Justice Executive Director Elijah Hutchinson, and Alexander Potulicki, PE, Section Manager of Demand Response at Con Edison are all excited about and supporting our work. #CleanEnergy #EnergyStorage #Sustainability #ClimateAction #NYC #BatteryStorage #RenewableEnergy

Creating distributed clean energy solutions for the urban grid
About us
NineDot Energy creates innovative energy solutions that make the urban grid cleaner, more equitable, more resilient and less costly. Our current development focus is on building and operating battery storage sites in the New York City metropolitan area, including Westchester and Long Island. We are working to enable vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capabilities at our projects as well. The NineDot Energy name derives from the classic mathematical puzzle for sparking out-of-the-box solutions. Our “outside the box” creativity combines business model innovation and community-centered solutions to catalyze clean energy projects in high-value parts of the electric utility grid. Based at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering Urban Future Lab in Brooklyn, New York. We have received financial support from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency (NYSERDA) and the Carlyle investment group, among others.

Thank you Con Edison for inviting us to your offices this week to share thoughts about New York’s transition to clean energy! Linda Hammel Tatlow, CFA of NineDot Labs, along with Adam Cohen (NineDot’s co-founder and CTO), discussed how we are ramping up our battery storage sites across the NYC metro area. That includes our first operational site in the northeast Bronx, which discharged its batteries ⚡️many times in June and July, helping with grid resiliency during New York’s recent heat waves. NineDot and Con Edison have been working diligently to bring more of our battery sites 🔋 online this year, with even greater growth coming in 2025. Building urban clean energy infrastructure requires significant collaboration and outside-the-box problem-solving, so we couldn't be more grateful for Con Edison's partnership. We have tremendous respect for the work ConEd does on a daily basis to keep the power flowing on the country's most reliable electric network, and our mission helps ConEd maintain this reliability while making the grid cleaner and cheaper through battery storage. (Thanks to Michael Richter of Brightcore Energy as well for signing our carefully preserved memorabilia from his 1994 Stanley Cup win 🏆). #batterystorage #energytransition

Today we announced the closing of an additional $25 million revolving credit facility from NY Green Bank, a division of NYSERDA. This upsized facility brings our total financing from NYGB to $50 million, fueling our mission to support New York's transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources. Kelsey Clair, Director at NY Green Bank, who co-led the transaction, said, “This catalytic financing… is spurring multiples of invested capital on our contribution and driving significant impact in a key growth area of energy storage, while facilitating deployment of additional battery storage sites in New York City.” Since our first closing with NYGB, we've made significant strides: Our initial Bronx battery site is fully operational and we're on track with the buildout of our next sites to reach commercial operation this year. Having the support of a dedicated public fund like NY Green Bank has been critical in our ability to execute and grow. Together, we're making the City’s grid more resilient, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and paving the way for a greener future in New York. #CleanEnergy #Sustainability #BatteryStorage #NYGreenBank #RenewableEnergy #RenewableEnergyFinance #CleanEnergyFunding #SustainableFinance https://lnkd.in/emUk3Wdt

At NineDot Energy (and in the clean energy space more broadly!) partnerships are key to successful projects and community impact. One of our proudest collaborations is with the Bronx Charter School for Better Learning, so it was fitting for Adam Cohen, NineDot CTO and cofounder, and Shubert Jacobs, Executive Director of BBL, to share the stage with Sara B. Chandler of Elemental Excelerator at the Urban Future Lab Urban Future Forum, supported by the Wells Fargo Innovation Incubator (IN2). Adam and Shubert highlighted the benefits of our collaboration and shared mission of creating a clean energy future for the next generation. During our collaboration, NineDot employees engaged with students, sharing their knowledge and working together on a mural for our first Bronx battery storage site. They also gave a well-deserved shoutout to Mac Anderson-Cooper and Karlene Buckle for their leadership supporting the students and especially this wonderful mural project. #CommunityEngagement #NineDotEnergy #CleanEnergy #ClimateSolutions #CommunityImpact #Sustainability

Thank you to New York Governor Hochul, the New York Public Service Commission, NYSERDA, and all involved for advancing New York's sustainability leadership! The Energy Storage Roadmap will boost retail (community-scale) battery storage across the state and drive a greener future for all New Yorkers. #Sustainability #CleanEnergy #NewYork #BatteryStorage
Today, the NYS Public Service Commission approved our Energy Storage Roadmap which will allow NYSERDA to expand programs & implement key strategies to deploy storage safely & effectively to reach the expanded goal of 6 GW by 2030, which will cover at least 20% of the state's peak electricity load. This Roadmap aims to create energy storage programs to cost-effectively unlock renewable energy growth, improve grid reliability, enhance customer resilience, and improve public health by reducing exposure to harmful pollutants. Energy storage is essential as New York works to decarbonize our electric grid, manage increased energy loads, and optimize the integration and use of clean, renewable energy. New York is taking significant strides in ensuring a resilient energy future!
