On #NationalPhilanthropyDay, we recognize the power of bold investments in visionary leaders. Ten years ago, NewSchools wrote the first check to support Carmita Semaan’s idea for what would become the Surge Fellowship. That initial investment demonstrated our belief in the power of diverse education leaders to improve outcomes for all students. Today, Surge Institute has supported over 500 leaders of color in eight cities, collectively impacting more than 3 million students. This kind of impact is only possible when funders take risks, invest early, and center equity. Carmita’s courage, vision, and leadership have created a ripple effect of change, inspiring a generation of leaders to step into their genius. This is the essence of philanthropy—making catalytic investments to spark enduring change.

To all the incredible venture leaders and NewSchools team members who joined together in Houston last month for our Innovative Schools Community of Practice — thank you! Your commitment to learning, collaboration, and growth made this experience special and we appreciate partnering with you. Together, we explored strategies for personal and team development, sparked ideas for an Expanded Definition of Student Success (EDSS), and, most importantly, connected deeply as a community of school leaders. The rich conversations, peer-to-peer learning, and shared reflections created a space where everyone felt supported and inspired. We hope you left not only with practical tools, but also with renewed energy from being in community with others who are just as passionate about creating better outcomes for students. And, of course, we hope you made some Texas-style memories along the way!
