Food feeds the body and soul, brings people together and builds community—all goals of FareStart, a nonprofit focused on helping overcome barriers to employment through food-based business training. Continuing our tradition of working with nonprofits whose mission aligns with our own, we recently worked with FareStart on a pro bono project to renovate its flagship restaurant in the heart of Seattle.    The dining venue is multipurpose: a private, rentable event space; and fundraising space; and a classroom for FareStart’s students, helping prepare them for food-based careers. The design—a vibrant, bright and energetic space that flexes from daytime cafe to a formal fundraising setting—is focused on revitalization. Exposed beams and ducts retain the building’s original character, while wooden trays with the names of supporters adorn the walls, building on the soul of FareStart’s mission.

Hot summer days have us thinking more than ever about climate-friendly ways to beat the heat. Cities along the equator are no strangers to this conundrum, with heat and humidity levels rising in tandem with growth in the region.     How can we accommodate emerging economies and increased construction, and address critical sustainability needs in these areas? Here, we explore three strategies to design mixed-use high-rise developments in tropical climates that can be successfully applied to tall buildings all over the world. First, create a “generative” workplace through connection and well-being. Second, implement location-specific sustainability measures. And last, design with a sense of place. https://lnkd.in/gs4KPmdZ

We’re proud to announce that the Microsoft East Campus Modernization project wins an Urban Land Institute Americas Award for Excellence! The project—which includes the Thermal Energy Center that harnesses the earth’s energy to power the campus—also received special recognition in the low-carbon development category.       Situated on 72 acres of Microsoft’s Redmond, WA, headquarters and encompassing a wide array of workspaces and amenities, the new East Campus reflects the company’s commitment to its employees and community in Puget Sound. The urban-inspired, pedestrian- and bike-friendly setting features a variety of retail spaces, wellness amenities and culinary hubs, with a two-acre plaza at its heart that is open to all.      Aligning with its goal of being carbon negative by 2030, Microsoft is pursuing ILFI Zero Carbon and LEED Platinum certifications, and has already received Salmon Safe Certification for the East Campus. Ten developments from across North America have been selected as winners of ULI’s 2024 ULI Americas Awards for Excellence. ULI began the Awards for Excellence program in 1979 to recognize superior development efforts in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors. Winning projects represent the highest standards of achievement in the land use profession and encompass a wide range of land uses, sizes, investments, and geographic locations. “This year’s winners set a high standard of excellence and innovation in social, environmental, and design values for our industry,” said jury chair Doug Voigt, Partner, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. “The ULI Americas Award for Excellence program plays a crucial role in advancing ULI’s mission and demonstrating how distinguished developments can positively impact whole communities and enrich the built environment worldwide. The jury was impressed by the high caliber of entries, notably the diversity of projects tackling the affordable housing crisis, and it was a privilege to work alongside my fellow jurors.”  A special congratulations to: Cleveland Foundation HQ: Cleveland Foundation East Campus Modernization Project: Microsoft Canary Landing: DREAM Asset Management Corporation, Kilmer Group, Tricon Residential Lincoln Common: McCaffery, Hines Mill Creek Valley: St. Louis CITY SC, Great Rivers Greenway Omaha Riverfront: City of Omaha, Metropolitan Entertainment & Convention Authority Avivo Village: Avivo 550 Madison: The Olayan Group Austin Housing Conservancy: Affordable Central Texas Bottleworks District: Hendricks Commercial Properties Read more at https://lnkd.in/dpbjBZuT

Almost every aspect of healthcare can benefit from increased efficiency, from operational protocols to the way buildings are designed. At the same time, beautiful, high-quality healthcare environments improve patient and staff experience and outcomes. Fortunately, when it comes to healthcare design, beauty and efficiency are not mutually exclusive. A standards-based approach provides healthcare organizations with cost, schedule and scope certainty while delivering a consistent experience. For Atrium Health in the Carolinas, NBBJ spearheaded a standardization effort across six hospitals in collaboration with multiple architecture firms. The team successfully mitigated over $100M of cost escalation exposure by coupling this standards-based approach with prefabrication. Doing so also ensured that patient rooms had a similar look and feel from a finish, branding and health equity standpoint, regardless of designer or location. https://lnkd.in/gNBuaqc4 Atrium Health I DPR Construction

As #healthcare systems grapple with cash flow challenges and changing market conditions, traditional, static long-term master plans are no longer flexible enough to keep up.      Fortunately, a new approach to master planning—one that maps the changing variables that impact an organization’s real estate footprint over time and enables them to flex or change course as needed—allows healthcare systems to plan intelligently for the future.    Rather than a book on a shelf, today’s interactive, responsive master plans also help clarify whether, and when, to renovate, pivot or build—or a combination of the three. Whether you have capital and are wondering how to spend it wisely or need to take a more conservative approach but want to plan for the future, we've identified five steps to help you reveal which path to take in your own organization, and what it might look like once you decide on an approach.  https://lnkd.in/eqguNPNX #nbbjdesign #healthcaredesign #healthcareplanning #strategicplan

The ability to work from anywhere means the sense of collegiality in the workplace is waning. It remains difficult to come together as a company without a home base—whether digital or physical.     For a confidential technology company, our team created a series of prototypical work environments and experiences that help the organization test its vision of an untethered headquarters. These interventions were intended to be built quickly, without the added time or cost of a full renovation.     A combination of scenarios for in-person work experiences—including drop-in spaces, “learning lodges” and culture hubs—and digital interactions ranging from technology, wellness, learning and concierge services connect employees every day at work, no matter where they are. Now, people no longer have to choose between a great job and the location that fits their lifestyle.    📸: Moris Moreno #futureofwork #workplacedesign #workplacestrategy #nbbjdesign

Sports facilities need to remain modern to appeal to fans and support their communities. Rather than building new, updating aging sports facilities with new infrastructure and mechanics is inherently less carbon- and energy-intensive. Today, we’re proud to announce that our renovation and redesign of the Central Bank Center achieves LEED Silver status!    "Working with local firm EOP Architects, we were able to retain the building's iconic nature and celebrate its importance to the people of Kentucky by utilizing the existing structure, while also making a positive environmental impact by prioritizing the use of local and low-emitting materials, daylighting strategies, and efficient water and waste management,” said Andrzej Czech, AIA, LEED Green Associate, Principal and lead architect on the project.     Learn more about about the renovation of Central Bank Center here: https://lnkd.in/gtUZ7YFP #nbbjdesign #renovation #renewal #carbonreduction

Hot or not? Whether you believe hotdesking is the way of the future, or you’re a creature of habit that prefers a designated workstation, many organizations are reverting to assigned seating to lure people back to the office. Our workplace strategy team’s research also shows that a designated desk contributes to psychological safety at work—which in turn helps with focus, productivity and satisfaction.    Curious about other ways workplace strategy can help maximize the performance of staff and spaces and align culture and workflows?
