#StoriesOfNSA - I didn’t realize NSA did the type of work that I was doing – funny, that I grew up in Annapolis, knew NSA was in Maryland, but never thought about working here until a chance meeting in a hallway. I had been working in industry for ten years and was ready for a change. During a tour of NSA for a contractor job, I ran into a colleague from my alma mater, who was the Technical Director for Facilities. We chatted, and he mentioned NSA employee job openings. Without that conversation, I’m not sure I would have ever ended up at NSA. When you think of NSA and have seen movies, you are led to believe that it’s a well-oiled machine and that all our processes are systematic, defined, and static. The scripted dialog we see in the movies does not represent the complexity and pace of the work at NSA. I was surprised by how quickly things change here, and we must adapt. This allows for much more creativity and innovation than I ever thought was possible. We are always developing new ways of solving problems, and the learning curve was steeper than I expected. I saw a phrase while driving into the office today that resonated with me, ‘you can’t be doing it wrong cause no one knows how to do it right’! When you are treading new ground, there isn’t always a clear solution, and you need to be innovative to solve challenging problems. This is what I mean about being on the cutting edge of technology. Another great benefit of working at NSA is that I’ve been all over the world. Over a period of five years, I went on about 50 temporary duty assignments and that doesn’t include all the opportunities I’ve had to live abroad. This is where the sum of my most interesting experiences have occurred. When I was in Germany, some colleagues wanted to take me to a restaurant they discovered. It was in the middle of farm country, and we drove for over an hour! When we arrived, I was surprised to discover the restaurant was very small venue in the basement of a house. Not what I was expecting, but the food was great! Another first for me was getting hit by a tumbleweed in Idaho, I’ve never seen a tumbleweed and when they hit you it hurts! While I was on a work trip to the Utah data center, I was surprised when I ran into a tarantula, I had never seen a tarantula before. These are the experiences you never forget. – MS

Standards are critical as we innovate, adapt, and advance while securing critical and emerging technologies. The Enduring Security Framework (ESF) —a public-private cross-sector working group led by NSA and CISA— is releasing guidance that urges early engagement in emerging technology standards-related activities, the development of a more standards-savvy U.S. workforce, and engagement with academia to grow the next generation of standards experts as important steps towards growing and sustaining U.S. leadership in standards development.
