We're soaring into the weekend with #FloraandFaunaFriday. Did you know that the Bald Eagle can be found in Maryland all year round? They are mostly found around water sources such as lakes, reservoirs, rivers, marshes and coasts. Adult Bald eagles are known for their bright yellow talons, dark brown bodies and of course their white, or "bald", head and tail! Bald Eagles typically have a wing span of over six feet and are nearly 3 feet tall. With their powerful wings, they are often seen flying high or gliding long distances like the one in the picture. Due to their large wing span, Bald Eagles tend to build their four to five foot wide nests where they have easy access to them. Bald Eagles diet mainly consists of fish but are known for being opportunistic feeders as they will dine on other birds, small mammals, reptiles and amphibians. They have also been seen taking food from other birds! These majestic creatures typically start courting in December and by March they lay a clutch of one to three eggs. Both parents care for their young after hatching in April where the young eagles remain for about 12 weeks. After leaving the nest, immature Bald Eagles maintain a nomadic lifestyle until they fully mature at around 5 years of age. Want to learn more?
