Sparking children's learning through play
About us
Minnesota Children’s Museum is dedicated to sparking children’s learning through play. Our vision: “Kids play more. Adults do, too. All families thrive in a happier, healthier and more innovative community through the radiant power of play.” The museum, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2021, has provided playful learning experiences to more than 12 million visitors. The museum's downtown St. Paul location features three floors of fun and 11 interactive exhibits. Minnesota Children's Museum is consistently rated as one of the top children’s museums in the country by national media outlets such as Forbes and Parents and was named as a finalist for an Institute of Museum and Library Services Medal of Service, the nation’s highest honor conferred on museums and libraries. As the nation’s leading developer of traveling children’s museum exhibits, the museum is a trailblazer in creating immersive learning environments, reaching more than 10 million children and adults in the United States, Canada and Mexico. We are grateful to be a recipient of funding from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund that was created with the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008. In our most recent fiscal year, this funding played a crucial role in supporting our playful experiences and community engagement efforts. Thanks to these funds, we were able to build the vet clinic in Our World, renovate The Studio, open The Mud Zone in The Backyard and introduce the exciting new Monsters on Summer Vacation exhibit. Legacy funds also supported a relaunch of Family Nights at the museum. Through partnerships with community organizations, schools and employee resources groups, we held 11 events serving more than 3,000 visitors!

There's no better way to learn than through play! Museum staff got the opportunity today to learn about Ojibwe language and culture through gameplay. A huge thank you to Anthony Drews, founder & CEO of Nashke Native Games, for sharing his games, teaching staff how to play and joining in the fun himself. And thank you to Trickster Tacos for a delicious lunch!

We'll say it again and again... Play is one of the most important tools we have for helping kids thrive and grow into healthy, happy adults. Open-ended, self-directed play gives kids space and freedom to explore, connect and build life skills. But unstructured play is on the decline. MPR News with Angela Davis dove into this important topic this morning, exploring why play is so important and why parents should make it a priority. With the opening of our newest special exhibit, Monsters on Summer Vacation, which focuses on identifying and expressing emotions, it's a great time to learn about the importance of social-emotional learning (SEL). SEL is critical for children’s development and plays an important role in a child’s academic success, mental health and overall wellbeing. Learn more about why SEL is so important and how you can support your child as they grow into a SEL expert.
