About us

The Methanol Institute serves as the trade association for one of the world's most vibrant and innovative industries. Founded in 1989 to lobby the U.S. Congress in support of methanol fuel markets, MI now serves its members in every corner of the globe from offices in both Washington, D.C. and Singapore. Each day, roughly 70,000 metric tonnes of methanol is shipped from one continent to another, enough product to fill 777 rail cars. As an essential chemical building block and emerging energy resource, methanol impacts our daily lives in infinite ways. Today, MI's membership includes the world’s leading methanol producers, technology companies, distributors, terminal operators and shippers.

A pleasure to moderate a panel discussion today at the Argus Media Methanol Forum in Houston on building a low carbon methanol value chain. Big thanks to my expert panel featuring Jess Cole from Nacero Inc., Amanda De Jager with Topsoe , Nicholas G. of STX Group, and Nelson V. from HINICIO. Great discussion on renewable feedstock availability, off-takes, and carbon intensity certification. I also had the opportunity chaired the afternoon sessions. Tomorrow, Methanol Institute’s Lawrence Navin will be doing double duty chairing the conference and presenting on U.S. policy issues impacting the methanol industry.

𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐥-𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 🚢 💧 could account for 𝟒𝟐% of the global fleet by 𝟐𝟎𝟓𝟎, according to new analysis published by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). This projection highlights a significant shift, with ABS forecasting a major surge 📈 in demand for methanol-fueled vessels starting in 2030, when the shipping industry will feel the impact of the International Maritime Organization's first emissions targets. #Methanol's rise in popularity among shipowners is largely due to its potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions 💨 when produced from renewable sources. According to ABS, the number of methanol-powered vessels is expected to jump ↗ from just 𝟑𝟎 in 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑 to 𝟐𝟎𝟑 by 𝟐𝟎𝟑𝟎. This growth will be driven by increased adoption across various vessel types, including containerships, bulkers, and tankers.   One of methanol's key 🔑 advantages is its compatibility with existing engine technologies and its ease of storage. Additionally, the establishment of methanol bunker hubs in several ports—both existing and upcoming—is set to further bolster the infrastructure needed for widespread adoption.   Read more ➡ https://lnkd.in/dXcPHJYB

We couldn’t agree more Vincent Clerc 👏 👏 👏 To overcome the challenge of fuel supply and fast-track the shift towards sustainability, we urgently need global regulations that incentivize the use of green fuels. These measures would not only make these fuels more economically viable but also drive innovation and scale up production, ultimately reducing costs.   Between the advancements made in the U.S. through the Inflation Reduction Act and the substantial investments in renewable energy in China, we are going to see a significant increase 📈 in the capacity for green methanol in the coming years.   The momentum for green fuels is growing, and we are dedicated to advocating for these critical policy changes at the upcoming IMO meetings. #MethanolInstitute #GreenShipping #AlternativeFuels #methanol Gregory Dolan A.P. Today, we marked a historic moment at the Port of Los Angeles with the naming ceremony of Alette Mærsk - the first vessel to arrive at a U.S. port powered by green methanol. We were honoured to have snowboarder and role model Chloe Kim as the godmother of our vessel. Her voice amplifies the urgency of climate action, which resonates with our mission. I am proud to stand with our valued customer Nike and Venkatesh Alagirisamy, who has championed climate responsibility within the supply chain, embracing our ECO Delivery biofuel programme and setting standards we hope others will follow. Thank you to our dedicated crew, Captain Douwe Joustra, Chief Engineer Hans johan.dummer, and Captain Jens-Christian Schou, they are the backbone of our success, safeguarding our customers’ goods every day at sea. But let’s be clear - the challenge ahead is immense. The shipping industry is vast, complex, and difficult to decarbonise. Our new series of dual-fuel vessels is a start, but it’s not a sustainable solution. We need immediate, coordinated action across all industries. By 2030, we aim to transport 25% of our ocean cargo using low-emissions fuel. But achieving this target requires systemic change. We urgently need regulation that makes green fuels viable and affordable. Global shipping leaders are united in this call. The time has come for the International Maritime Organization to approve the Green Balance Mechanism to incentivise sustainable shipping without significantly raising global trade costs. As the iconic Hollywood sign watched over us today, we are reminded this isn’t a dress rehearsal for our planet - the clock is ticking. Together, we must Just Do It! 🎉 A major milestone for sustainable shipping! 🚢🌱   A.P. Moller - Maersk’s Alette Maersk made history as the first container vessel to cross the Pacific from China to the US powered by green methanol. The vessel was officially named yesterday at the Port of LA by Olympic gold medalist Chloe Kim, who was honored as the ship’s godmother. Her advocacy for green shipping underscores the vital role of #alternativefuels in reducing emissions and combating climate change.   Alette Maersk is the fourth of twelve ships in Maersk’s fleet powered by methanol and traditional marine fuels. This landmark event highlights the crucial need for more affordable green fuel solutions if the industry is to meet the ambitious decarbonization targets set by scientists and global governments.   The transition to net-zero emissions in shipping is a gradual process. #Methanol plays a key role in this journey, moving from conventional production methods to more sustainable options such as blue and green methanol. Effective regulation and enforcement will be essential to achieving stable and affordable clean fuel prices. Methanol’s simplicity as a liquid fuel and its cost-effectiveness make it a promising candidate for helping the shipping industry reduce its carbon footprint while integrating renewable energy sources.   For methanol, it’s full steam ahead. ⚡ #MethanolInstitute #MaritimeIndustry #decarbonization #greenshipping

We’re excited to share another first: along with our subsidiary Waterfront Shipping, we completed the first ship-to-ship methanol bunkering demonstration in the Caribbean at the Port of Point Lisas in Trinidad and Tobago. This milestone was achieved in collaboration with the National Energy Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago, Paria Fuel Trading Company, NYK, Green Marine, Bunker Holding, Uni-Tankers and Dan Bunkering. The demonstration further proves methanol is a safe and simple-to-handle cleaner fuel that provides a future-proof pathway to a low-carbon future. It also positions Trinidad and Tobago as a key player in decarbonizing the maritime sector and establishes Point Lisas as a preferred destination for future methanol refueling operations. “This demonstration in Trinidad and Tobago is another step in supporting the shipping industry’s transition to lower-emission fuels,” says Paul Hexter, President of Waterfront Shipping. “By successfully conducting the first methanol ship-to-ship bunkering demonstration in the region, we have proven that our world-class maritime infrastructure is fully capable of supporting the energy transition,” adds Vernon Paltoo, President of the National Energy Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago. With methanol available at over 125 of the world’s largest ports, its use as a marine fuel can help the shipping industry meet increasingly strict air emissions regulations.
