Yesterday, the Council of the European Union formally adopted the new Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (UWWTD), with support from 23 member states. Notably, however, 15 countries expressed concerns about the potential impact on #medicine availability—a critical issue for millions of European #patients and the #competitiveness of the EU’s healthcare sector. The UWWTD introduces an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system, placing a significant financial obligation on pharmaceutical and cosmetics companies to cover at least 80% of costs associated with advanced wastewater treatment. While this move aims to strengthen environmental standards, it raises significant challenges for the healthcare sector: ▶️ #Generics make up 7 out of 10 dispensed medicines in Europe and represent 9 out of 10 critical treatments. These medicines provide #affordable, essential treatments for conditions like cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, mental health issues, and infections. Increased production costs risk severe impacts on patient care by disrupting access to these vital medicines. ▶️ The pharmaceutical industry already faces inflationary pressures, rising costs in energy, labor, materials, and ongoing supply chain challenges due to geopolitical issues. Adding UWWTD costs could lead to critical #shortages across Europe, affecting millions who need daily treatment. At Medichem, our commitment is clear: to provide accessible, #high-quality, and #sustainable medicines to patients who need treatment. Since our founding half a century ago, we have consistently prioritized environmental #responsibility, operational #excellence, and patient health. Now, addressing these regulatory challenges is essential to safeguard #accessibility. To achieve this, we advocate for sustainable pharmaceutical policies across Europe. A balanced approach in EU policies that encourages domestic production of medicinal products and active ingredients can strengthen supply chains, reduce dependency on external sources, prevent critical medicine shortages, and uphold the highest standards in generic medicines. We are excited to share the latest milestones of our new #injectables plant, Medichem Solutions, located in the Technology Park of Asturias, in Llanera. We have successfully completed the FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) for the fill and finish machines dedicated to vials, bags, and prefilled syringes (PFS). These tests are crucial to ensure that all equipment operates correctly prior to shipment and installation. In the coming weeks, FAT tests will be conducted for the Autoclave, Freeze Dryer, and Water Treatment Systems, marking the final phase of this process. Our target is to have all machinery installed by the end of this year. Additionally, Infrastructure work continues to advance, with the installation of drainage systems, along with improvements to the roof and exterior façade. We're making great progress and excited for what's ahead! Contact our team if you are interestesed in fill&finish capabilities in a #European state-of-the-art injectables plant. https://lnkd.in/d3HJRGXJ
