👏 👏 👏 New Discovery! The Hidden Connection Between Aging and Cancer Aging stands as a critical risk factor for cancer, yet its underlying mechanisms remain murky. Recently, in a paper published in Cancer Cell, researchers employed cutting-edge single-cell multiomics technology to explore age-related changes in the mammary glands of rats. They discovered intensified epithelial proliferation, loss of luminal cell characteristics, and decreased immune cells—all these changes are closely tied to age! Furthermore, they identified a unique luminal progenitor cell population specific to old rats, whose features mirror those of precancerous lesions. The midkine gene (Mdk), which is upregulated with age, emerges as the "culprit" regulating these cells! Experiments have shown that Mdk can cause young rats to "age prematurely," promoting mammary tumorigenesis. 🌟 Celebrating Groundbreaking Research: 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 🌟 ✅ The Karolinska Institute in Sweden announced that the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine will be awarded to scientists Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their discovery of microRNA (microribonucleic acid) and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation. The single prize of the Nobel Prize in 2024 is 11 million Swedish krona (approximately 7.45 million yuan), which is the same as in 2023. The prize will be shared by two people. ✅ This year's Nobel Prize was awarded to two scientists for their discovery of a core principle in the regulation of gene activity. The information stored in chromosomes can be thought of as the operating manual for each cell in our body. Every cell carries identical chromosomes, which means every cell has the exact same set of genes and instructions. However, different types of cells, such as muscle cells and nerve cells, have significant differences. How does this difference arise? The key lies in gene regulation, which helps cells select those instructions relevant to their own functions, ensuring that different types of cells only activate genes relevant to their functions. ✅ Focusing on the developmental processes of different cell types, Victor Ambrose and Gary Rufkun discovered a new class of microRNA molecules that play a key role in gene regulation. Their groundbreaking discovery reveals an entirely new mechanism of gene regulation that is critical to multicellular organisms, including humans. We now know that more than a thousand microRNAs are encoded in the human genome.
