About us

Philosophy Buildings can have a profound influence on our health, psychic and spiritual state of being. Harmony and balance, light and color, energy relationships to our surroundings, and geometric form are embodying principles that enhance the environment in which we live. We at MBH ARCHITECTURE specialize in all facets of Healthcare related Projects. Historically, we have designed over seventy Nursing Homes, fifty Clinical Hospital projects, sixteen Assisted Living Facilities, eighteen Independent Living Elderly housing projects and multiple Holistic Health Centers. Our firm has endeavored to provide environments that raise the spirit and quality of life for each of its residents, patients and staff. The uniqueness of these projects was driven by their selective programming directions and the desire to provide Holistic environments that de-emphasize institutional care and encourage a residential community.   As a result of our work on nearly 100 projects in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Vermont, the firm has an ongoing working relationship with the Department of Public Health; Department of Social Services; CHFA and HUD .

The Ridge Recovery Center Taking advantage of this beautiful and vast mountaintop landscape, MBH has transformed this former Retreat into a Holistic healing center focusing on those who have chosen the difficult path to recovery. Vistas and connections to the exterior provides an abundance of natural light to the interior environment including resident rooms, common areas and a centrally located clerestory space that serves as a multi-purpose room for residents to congregate and partake in daily activities. Residents will also have the opportunity be one with nature as they stroll along meandering tree lined paths and stop for moments of self-reflection at one of the many natural niches scattered throughout the roughly 60 acres that make up the property.   The Ridge Recovery Center opened its doors in late 2023 as a center for recovery, rehabilitation, and holistic health. The beautiful 60-acre site upon which the Ridge rests has a long history as a place for spiritual health and healing, as it was previously home to a religious retreat. While The Ridge is not a religious facility and welcomes people of all faiths and beliefs, some historic icons and artwork remain on site as comforting symbols of hope and healing and to honor the longstanding history and purpose of the property. The Ridge provides a perfect place for a peaceful and personal connection with the surrounding environment enhancing the mind, body & spirit. MBH Architecture is extremely proud to have played such an integral part of this amazing project. Knowing that this facility will be able to provide the necessary help to people with substance abuse issues, in and outside the State of CT, enforces our purpose and dedication as healthcare architects.

MBH Architecture Celebrates 50 years!!   What better way to celebrate the firm’s 50-year anniversary than to honor our founding principal, Michael B. Herlands. Although Michael retired a few years ago, he passes on the culture that he established early on with his passion for architecture, family, “listening” to client’s needs and desires. Through his guidance and passion to create environments that raise the human spirit, he successfully completed a diverse range of projects including Light Industrial, R&D, Manufacturing, Places of Worship, Residential, Retail, Senior Living, Multi Family and Master Planning. Most notably, Michael Herlands and Nicholas Michnevitz led the way for MBH to become one of the most Experienced and Respected Healthcare firms in the Northeast. As Michael embarks on this new chapter, the staff of MBH Architecture thanks him for enriching our lives with his leadership, generosity of spirit, and mentorship over the past 50 years.   Nicholas Michnevitz, Principal of MBH Architecture, continues to move the firm forward with the same, passion, values, and core principles that the firm was built upon. With his leadership, he challenges and empowers those around him to strengthen their critical thinking to help bring architecture to life. His vision, creativity and innovation in Healthcare, Senior Living, Mixed Use and Multi-Family design has brought the firm to new heights within the Greater Hartford Community, the State of Connecticut and beyond.   MBH would like to express our sincere gratitude to our current and past clientele, consultants, vendors, partners, friends, and professional relationships that have supported us over these 50 years! Equally important is our family at MBH whose dedication to the firm and commitment to our values and mission has been unparalleled. We could not have gotten here without you all!
