MassCEC’s Bruce K. Carlisle, Lisa Berry Engler, Leslie Nash, Sarah Cullinan, and Meg Howard had a great time last week at the Cleantech Connect event hosted by the Japanese Consulate General of Boston at Venture Café Cambridge. The team shared how MassCEC is: ✔ making it easier for #climatetech companies to stay, scale, and succeed in #Massachusetts ✔ investing in the people and infrastructure that will support the state’s growing #offshorewind industry ✔ fostering the collaboration and innovation we need to modernize the electric grid ✔ accelerating the widespread adoption of climate solutions that make our homes and buildings more energy efficient and reduce carbon emissions Special thanks to the team at the Japanese Consulate General of Boston for organizing this opportunity to connect! #Buildings are responsible for a significant amount of global carbon emissions, including during the construction or renovation process. That’s why we organized a first-in-the-nation Embodied Carbon Reduction Challenge. Ivy S. from Boston Globe Media recently spoke with MassCEC Program Director Beverly Craig and the competition’s participants about the ways we can design, build, and improve buildings that are better for people and the planet. Yesterday was a busy day in the life of a Massachusetts Clean Energy Center Program Director! My #netzerogrid team, with colleagues from the Department of Energy Resources (DOER), started the day with a visit to Eversource Energy's largest #substation, or what may soon be known as #cleanenergyhubs - Substation 385, or K Street. This thing is BIG, and important - a highway clover-leaf for the region's electric grid, where transmission and distribution functions meet, connecting north and south, and handing off power to key functions such as the MBTA. (Unfortunately we missed the onsite photo opp, Alison Magoon, Corrin Moss, Jacob Chaplin, Aurora Edington, Julia Fox, Charles Dawson, Michael Giovanniello!) On our drive back Downtown, we continued our #cleanenergyhub tour, as our hosts pointed out several lovely old brick buildings that disappear into the cityscape but in fact house additional substations. These important sites make our city tick! Thank you to our hosts, including Erin Engstrom, Digaunto Chatterjee, & Meredith Boericke. We also learned about the engagement with the surrounding neighborhood the Eversource team has focused on in their recent substation upgrades and redesign, which has resulted in adding harborwalk access around the perimeter, altering plans to preserve tree cover, and crowdsourcing input on the aesthetics of a new sea wall. You also want to visit a substation you say? You can! Make your way over to K Street, cruise the harborwalk, and feast your eyes on an impressive piece of energy infrastructure that is enabling our decarbonization journey. After an outfit change… I ended my day presenting at a Cleantech Connect meet-up hosted by the Japanese Consulate General of Boston. Thanks to our host, Kirstin Davidson! I discussed our upcoming key work on #DER #GridServices, a project that will enable additional #VPPs in the Commonwealth and support #gridtech providers with more opportunities for supporting our State's distributed energy ecosystem. Now what does Wednesday have in store for me?

Amazing news for MA residents and commercial building owners! 🏙 U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced that #Massachusetts, along with the City of Boston and the City of Cambridge, will receive nearly $20 million to accelerate the implementation of building performance standards that will make the places we live and work more energy efficient and resilient. These funds will empower building trades programs in #Justice40 communities and lead to the creation of a Building Performance Exchange hub. Congratulations to MassCEC’s Workforce Development and High-Performance Buildings teams for their contributions to this win! Read DOE’s press release for more information ⬇

Trees can teach us a thing or two about climate solutions. Check out this TechCrunch article from Tim De Chant about how MassCEC portfolio company Adept Materials’ humidity-absorbing paint was inspired by trees. The startup’s innovative paint has the power to make homes and buildings more energy-efficient and resistant to moisture damage, saving owners time and money on maintenance and utilities while reducing their carbon emissions in the process. That’s why we participated in Adept Materials’ recent seed round alongside leading homebuilders like D.R. Horton and PulteGroup. We can’t wait to see this product hit the market early next year! #climatetech
