  • Yesterday, we had over 120 people with our lead sponsors at La Colaborativa's beautiful space to celebrate the passing of a statewide Access to Counsel pilot program! Thank you all who were able to be in the room, we know that others were there in spirit. After nearly a decade of advocacy to ensure that low income tenants and owner occupants have legal representation when facing eviction, the Governor and the House and Senate supported a dedicated line item in the FY25 budget to create an ATC pilot program. Amidst a national housing crisis, it is so crucial that tenants facing evictions be represented, a factor that has proven to decrease housing instability and homelessness. Thank you to all of the individuals and organizations who have provided support along the way, with a huge thank you to our lead sponsors, Sen. Sal DiDomenico, Rep. Dave Rogers, and Rep. Mike Day. This feat would not have been possible without your continued support. We are also deeply grateful to the Access to Counsel Advisory Committee, for years of planning and strategizing, all of the community members who have shown up to the statehouse and shared their stories, and to Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation, who is going to assist with the implementation of this program. We have worked so hard to get here, but the fight is not over! Now our mission is to preserve this line item and pass the Access to Counsel bill to ensure Access to Counsel is permanent for MA residents.

  • This years theme for Hispanic Heritage Month is Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together. MLRI Senior Immigration Attorney, Iris Gomez is the definition of a pioneer in legal services. Throughout her life, literature has guided Iris. As a young Colombian immigrant in Southern Florida, she studied the poems of José Martí, whose words "Con los pobres de la tierra/Quiero yo mi suerte echar" (roughly translated: I wish to cast my lot with the poor of the earth) were immortalized in the Cuban folk song “Guantanamera.” This drew Iris to civil legal aid, where I’ve worked as an immigrant rights attorney ever since. She has always carried the belief that "in law, as in fiction, we can create happy endings." Iris, thank you for your outstanding advocacy over the years!

  • In this CBS News article, new census data reveals a troubling trend: Massachusetts now has one of the largest income gaps in the nation, highlighting the increasing struggles of middle-class families. While many thrive, a significant portion is left behind, with about 27% of households earning less than $50,000 annually. MLRI Housing Attorney, Mark Martinez, says this statistic does not surprise him and that growing gap suggests more families are falling out of the middle class. This further emphasizes the need for affordable housing policies - we must take action to combat this disparity and ensure that everyone has the opportunity for a stable and secure future. Click the link to read the full article.

  • Congratulations to MLRI Senior Housing Attorney, Annette Duke, who is to receive the Boston Bar Association John G. Brooks Award this year! 🎉 This award, named in honor of John G. Brooks, a champion of legal services for the economically-disadvantaged, recognizes legal services attorneys on the front lines. Annette embodies this award - throughout her career specializing in tenants' rights, public housing, and court reform, with a focus on promoting housing justice, stopping displacement, and preventing homelessness through multi-pronged, collaborative, community-driven advocacy. “It's not about access to justice. It's really about justice. That's what we're fighting for. And having our work recognized is important to lift up the community and tenants we are fighting for and continue to create a shift in the conversation where people realize that housing is a human right.” – Annette Duke. We are incredibly proud to have you on our team, Annette! 👏🏽

  • Statement of Georgia D. Katsoulomitis, Executive Director of Massachusetts Law Reform Institute (MLRI) In Response to Anti-Immigrant Rhetoric Against Haitian Community The Massachusetts Law Reform Institute (MLRI) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit poverty law organization that does not endorse any political candidate. At the same time, as an organization grounded in social, racial and economic justice, we do not and cannot turn a blind eye to injustice. We cannot remain silent in the face of Donald Trump and J.D. Vance’s relentless, baseless and racist attacks upon all immigrants – and currently against the Haitian people, so many of whom are our cherished friends, neighbors and co-workers in Massachusetts. On Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at 12 noon, there will be a rally at 139 Tremont Street, Boston – at the Embrace Boston Monument. Please join us and show your support for our Haitian community and stand up against hateful language, discrimination and violence against all immigrants.
