Mass General Brigham researchers have actually developed a new quiz you can take that can help predict your risk of all of those conditions, called the McCance Brain Care Score™. The quiz evaluates 12 modifiable physical, lifestyle and social factors that can help patients protect their brain health, and they have now shown that it can predict risk of late-age depression as well. Take the quiz and read more about the McCance Brain Care Score™: http://spklr.io/6045sM9x Mass General Brigham authors include Jonathan Rosand, MD, MSc, Sanjula Dhillon Singh, MD, PhD, MSc, and colleagues at the McCance Center for Brain Health at MGH, along with Christopher D. "We need to pass this extension now. It's a win-win for everyone," says Heather O'Sullivan MS, APRN, Mass General Brigham Healthcare at Home president. In a recent Becker's Healthcare op-ed, she urges Congress to pass a 5-year extension of the Acute Hospital Care at Home waiver before it expires at the end of this year. Adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors are currently the most efficient option for intracranial gene therapies for neurodegenerative diseases. Miguel C. Santoscoy, PhD, a research fellow in the Department of Neurology and Molecular Neurogenetics Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital, Casey A. Maguire, PhD, a gene delivery expert and 2023 Spark Awardee, and colleagues are working to increase AAV diffusion throughout the brain and increase transgene expression in cholinergic neurons, which regulate the activity of the most abundant striatal neurons and fine-tune a variety of brain functions. The team reports two improvements to AAV-based intracranial gene therapy in Molecular Therapy: Methods & Clinical Development. Read more: http://spklr.io/6047sJXX

Care for people with substance use disorders is continuing to develop. Treating addiction like a health condition is a key change that Sarah Wakeman, MD, Mass General Brigham senior medical director for substance use disorder, is focused on. "Caring for addiction requires science-backed medical interventions coupled with personalized support that addresses a range of social drivers of health," writes Dr. Wakeman. "This sort of holistic, integrated approach is standard for people receiving treatment for cancer, HIV, and other chronic conditions. Now it must become the standard for people with substance use disorders." Read more of her thoughts on this subject in this STAT op-ed: http://spklr.io/6046ShE6.

The Mass General Brigham Disability Employee Inclusion Alliance (DEIA) and Community Care Van team celebrated ADA Day last week at Boston’s City Hall Plaza with Mayor Michelle Wu. The day commemorates the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The DEIA team spoke with visitors, providing links and information about careers at Mass General Brigham and sharing details about the Massachusetts General Hospital Lurie Center ASPIRE program including vocational preparation resources for people with autism. They distributed injury cold packs and hand sanitizer, and, given the abundance of sunshine, visitors were also grateful to receive sunscreen and sunglasses. Our Community Care Van team attended to 17 people over the two hours, offering care for blood pressure and diabetes, along with social risk mitigation. “Many people who stopped by our table told us how happy they were with the care they received at Mass General Brigham and appreciated being able to visit the care van,” said Zary Amirhosseini, manager of the Mass General disability program at the Office of Belonging and Engagement, co-chair of Disability Employee Inclusion Alliance ERG, and member of Mayor Wu’s Disability Advisory Board. “It was a great day with many organizations engaging with the community to share programs and activities that provide improved access and services for citizens with disabilities,” said Lynne Brady Wagner, Mass General Brigham health equity director, specialty hospitals and ERAP services lines, enterprise disability clinical equity lead. “We were proud to represent Mass General Brigham and look forward to returning to this annual celebration honoring the rights of people with disabilities.”

The Mass General Brigham community was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jack Connors Jr., a visionary leader and Mass General Brigham founding Board Chair. Jack served as chair of the Brigham and Women's Hospital Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1996, when he was invited to serve as the chair of the Mass General Brigham board—a role he held for 16 years before becoming chair emeritus in 2012. He was incredibly generous and thoughtful with his time, talents and resources. Anne Klibanski, MD, president and chief executive officer of Mass General Brigham, reflects on his legacy.
