Happy Birthday, Chesty! #OTD we honor the Corps’ most decorated Marine's 126th birthday, Lt. Gen. Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller, the only Marine ever awarded 5 Navy Crosses, the nation's second-highest military honor. During his 37-year career, Chesty served 27 of those years in foreign lands or at sea. Marked by his heroism and valor during WWII, the Korean War, and expeditionary service in China, Nicaragua and Haiti, #ChestyPuller became one of the most recognizable figures in military history. Chesty was revered as a Marine’s Marine, embodying an unwavering warrior spirit and upholding the esteemed tradition of excellence that all #Marines aspire to emulate. Through his character and devotion in combat, Chesty Puller’s legacy will forever inspire Marines.

Following A Dream Every spring, hundreds of young men and women at colleges and universities across America raise their right hands and swear to defend the Constitution as commissioned officers in the United States Marine Corps. While they are uniform in their appearance and their strict adherence to the high standards of our Corps, each of these new second lieutenants also brings a unique set of motivations, experiences, and perspectives to their service. 📹 John Martinez

#OTD 80 years ago, American troops launched an invasion of Saipan in the Western Pacific. The objective of the operation was to secure Saipan’s critical air base, providing the U.S. with a strategic position to conduct bombings of the Japanese mainland. The Marines of 2d Marine Division and 4th Marine Division fought alongside the US Army 27th Infantry Division, facing relentless artillery and mortar fire, and attacks from small arms, automatic weapons, and hand-to-hand combat. After 24 days of unyielding combat against roughly 32,000 motivated and disciplined Imperial Japanese Soldiers, U.S. forces claimed victory over the island on July 9, 1944. Now with Tokyo in range of American B-29 bombers, victory in the Pacific was in sight. #MarinesOfTheCorps #USMCHistory #BattleofSaipan
