Together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.
About us
Make-A-Wish® grants the heartfelt wishes of children battling critical illnesses. A wish becomes a rallying point for themselves, their families, and friends. Research shows that children who have wishes granted build the physical and emotional strength they need to fight. In short, a wish delivers hope when it is needed the most. Make-A-Wish was inspired by a 7-year-old boy named Chris Greicius, who wanted to be a law enforcement officer. His wish set in motion a phenomenon that would create an unprecedented kind of charity that grants wishes to children battling critical illnesses every 34 minutes nationwide. Three years after Chris’ wish inspired the formation of the charity, the local chapter which now spans across 45 counties in Northeastern & Central California and Northern Nevada was founded in 1983. Since then, more than 8500 wishes have been granted to children in our communities. With the help of generous donors, community supporters and dedicated volunteers in all of our regions, our chapter is on track to grant more than 400 wishes this year, or one every 20 hours. The vision of Make-A-Wish is to grant the wish of every eligible child to bring hope, strength, and joy to them when they most need it and to give them a lifetime of happy memories. Wishes are more than just a nice thing to have – they are a need to have for a child battling a critical illness. Having the ability to grant wishes is truly transformational. This is what the power of a wish is all about.

Meet Tyson, a 13-year-old wish kid from Northern California with a congenital heart condition who loves baseball. When Tyson was only 11 days old, he had his first open-heart surgery. The surgery went well, and later he had a second open-heart surgery for further repair. As he grew, he proved he has the heart of a fighter. Sure, Tyson loves pizza, video games and ice cream cake like many 13-year-old boys, but nothing beats sports – especially baseball. A player of the game himself, Tyson wished to attend a home game and meet the players on his favorite Major League team, the San Diego Padres. Tyson knew he wanted to not just go to a game, but to meet his heroes. Tyson’s wish was granted September 4 where his dreams finally came true. Not only did he spend time with his favorite players in the dugout at a home game, but he also threw out the first pitch! It was an unforgettable day for Tyson and the whole family. A BIG special thanks to the San Diego Padres, Make-A-Wish® San Diego and our friends at InterState Oil Company for helping bring this wish to life! Together, we are creating life changing wishes for children battling critical illness. ⚾💙 We have more wishes to grant like Tyson’s and need your help making the magic happen! Celebrating wishes in style! 🌺🏖️🌊 Every day, we rely on our community partners to move our mission forward. Through our Champions of Hope partnership with the Flaherty IMPACT Foundation, we have been able to grant more local wishes for children in our community like Luke! Luke is a local wish kiddo who wished to go to Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa in Hawaii, and he was sent off in style at the Wishing Place earlier this year! Thank you to the Flaherty family for adding extra magic to Luke’s wish journey and sharing the aloha spirit with his whole family! We recently received these sweet photos from Luke's family and felt like celebrating all over again! We are so appreciative for the Flaherty IMPACT Foundation’s support of our Make-A-Wish chapter here in Sacramento, and grateful for the impact we’ve been able to achieve locally. Together, we are creating life-changing wishes for children battling critical illness!

Thank you for helping us grant more wishes for children in the North State, like Angelee. #MakeAWish #WishUponAPar #WishGranting

Last week marked a magical milestone for 19 wish children (including 14-year-old Sammy from the Central Valley!) who joined the first-ever multi-day Star Wars-themed wish event at Disneyland Resort—Blaze Your Path: A Star Wars Adventure! After an immersive breakfast, during which wish kids chose to follow the light or dark path, the unique experience featured droid building, a scavenger hunt to assemble a lightsaber, surprise character visits, and an immersive private dinner and dessert party in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland Park. Wishes have the power to renew hope and uplift spirits for children facing critical illnesses, and experiences like Blaze Your Path: A Star Wars Adventure can be transformative for the entire family. Each child attending wished for something related to Star Wars and had their wishes come true, including Sammy. “We’re humbled that so many children choose Disney to make their dreams come true,” said Josh D'Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences and Make-A-Wish America board member. “We’re constantly finding innovative and uniquely Disney ways to grant wishes at our parks and experiences around the world.” Check out these pictures from Sammy's wish and this incredible experience for all 19 Wish children across the country!
