The Maine Community College System received a $75M grant, in June of this year, to expand its workforce training programs — the largest gift ever in the history of the 78-year college system. In partnership with Ascendium Education Group, The Chronicle of Higher Education Brand Studio dug into the close partnership that exists between the state government, local employers, and Maine’s community colleges. Over the last several months, I explored what's made Maine's community colleges so successful in educating and upskilling the state's largely remote rural and coastal population. To fully understand the economic challenges of the state and the joint public & private initiatives being created to tackle them, I interviewed everyone from MCCS president, David Daigler, and president emeritus, John Fitzsimmons, to L.L.Bean chief human resource officer, Sarah Cox. In the first video of this series, we look specifically at the community college system's efforts (with a honed focus on The Harold Alfond Center for the Advancement of Maine's Workforce) to create programming that meets the "speed of business".
