Thanks to Fierce Healthcare for a great event this week at the Fierce Health Payer Summit in Austin, TX. Their team pulled together and drove discussions on a lot of important topics, with panels that included LRVHealth, our portfolio companies and other industry leaders.     Josh Flum joined a discussion about PBMs and the challenging realities of rising drug costs as amazing new therapies come to market. He offered perspective about how innovators and incumbents can work together.     Humata Health’s Jeremy Friese, MD was on a panel about prior authorization where he talked about the ability for AI to help remove friction for payers, providers and patients. Coming out of the #BHT2024 this week, MedCity News shared a great piece on where leaders are seeing the most promise and progress in mental health care. One area Marissa Plescia highlighted was “startups addressing costly needs.” Ellen Herlacher explained: “There are many startups doing important work in mental health but are struggling to get paid for it. However, there are several startups that are bucking this trend. Advances in surgical technology and therapeutics have significantly improved cancer outcomes, with 18 million survivors and counting. New, more effective cancer drugs are being approved every month. Radiation therapy is now more targeted, cutting treatment time by nearly 50%, and robotic systems are helping surgeons resect even the hardest-to-reach tumors. So, cancer care is improving… right? Yes, but challenges remain. These advancements are still paired with a poor patient experience, a strained workforce, and unsustainable costs.
