About us
Local Projects is an exhibition and media design firm for museums and public spaces. While innovation drives much of today’s design, we’re interested in creating projects that endure. We’re reinventing public space through media. We focus on engaging audiences through emotion and technology, developing new ways for people to interact with art, cities and one another. We gather stories through collaborative storytelling projects, and between Storycorps, the 9/11 Memorial Museum and Change By Us, we have brought forth over 100,000 individuals’ stories and memories, sharing them with the world and touching millions of lives. Local Projects has won top prize for every major design award including the National Design Award for Interaction Design, Fast Company Masters of Design, Webby Gold, Muse Gold and AIGA Gold.

Join Amelia Falco AIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD-C at the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums' Building Museums conference in #stlouis this Spring!
🎉 Big news! I'm beyond excited to share that I'll be speaking at Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums’s 2025 Building Museums™ Symposium 🎤✨ about the incredible work behind the reimagining of The Columbus Museum! I'll be joining forces with Museum Director Marianne Richter, Derek Jones of Perkins&Will, and Lonny Schwartz of Design Minds for this dynamic panel discussion. 🙌 📍 Save the date: March 6, 2025, in St. Louis, Missouri 🗓️ Our panel, "From Renovation to Reimagined," promises an engaging conversation covering: - How the Columbus Museum fosters a stronger sense of belonging 🏛️❤️ - Its dedication to serving families and the broader community 👨👩👧👦 - A behind-the-scenes look at its innovative partnership with the local school district 🎒🌟 ✨ I’m particularly thrilled to dive into the concept of ritual-building in visitor experience. Ritual doesn’t have to be reserved for the sacred or special occasions—it can seamlessly integrate a museum visit into the everyday rhythms of community life. 🌍💡 💬 Join us for this transformative discussion! You can register here: https://lnkd.in/e-8bC-Zh 📸 Meanwhile, don’t miss these stunning new photos captured by Mark Herboth. See you in St. Louis! 🎉

Dian Fossey inspired generations of conservationists with a life devoted to the study and protection of the endangered mountain gorillas in Rwanda. When our friends and partners at MASS Design Group invited us to contribute to the design of the sprawling Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund in their home country of Rwanda, we jumped at the opportunity. After The American Institute of Architects (AIA) honored the project with a COTE Top Ten award this summer, we revisited the concepts we helped MASS Design develop to shape the Cindy Broder Conservation Gallery, an immersive educational exhibit located at the campus entrance. Experiences include a virtual welcome from Ellen DeGeneres herself, introductions to mountain gorillas to help visitors form 1-1 relationships as Dian did, a replica of Dian’s original cabin at the Karisoke Research Center to transport visitors to the moments of discovery she experienced, and a look behind the curtain of Fossey Fund’s deep scientific research. Congratulations to the Fossey Fund, MASS, formula D_, and the whole project team. Pay a visit to the Ellen Campus on your next visit to Rwanda! After two decades of pushing boundaries, we were ready to party. In November, we celebrated our 20-year anniversary and two decades' worth of memories with clients, friends, and partners. The celebration included a special toast from our creative leaders, interactive prototypes, and our client Dassai's best sake to top it all off. A favorite of the night was Creative Director Amelia Falco AIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD-C's Ode To Yes, referring to the giant "Yes" in our office that fuels everyday inspiration. "We say Yes— To the challenges that seem impossible, Because that’s what we do. We take the impossible, the uncertain, And we shape it, stretch it, redefine it into something innovative, new, Something meaningful, Something that matters." Thank you to our extended community for being part of the journey, and here’s to another 20 years. #localprojects #LP20

The Do Good Institute Campus is officially open! On October 10, our CEO Whitney Rutter and Creative Director Nathan Adkisson were in attendance to officially welcome the new Rings exhibit outside of Thurgood Marshall Hall with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, culminating years of work with the Do Good Institute at the University of Maryland. This first-of-its-kind live art display and sound bath shares impactful quotes from UMD grads who are making a real difference in the world as they walk through illuminated rings toward our bold, three-dimensional “Do Good" sign. We hope these outdoor installations inspire and delight visitors to campus, from prospective students to alumni. Stop by for a visit soon! #UMD #goterps #maryland #universityofmaryland #dogood #dogoodinstitute

Ms. Opal Lee, grandmother of Juneteenth, celebrated her 98th birthday on Thursday, and we were happy to unveil her gift: new renderings of the exhibits for the National Juneteenth Museum! Scheduled to open in 2026, the 50,000-square-foot museum located in Fort Worth’s Historic Southside neighborhood will celebrate the legacy of Juneteenth, the holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. “We specifically selected Local Projects for their unparalleled expertise in creating immersive and impactful exhibits. Their record of excellence aligns perfectly with our vision to honor Juneteenth in a way that educates and inspires,” said Jarred Howard, CEO of the Museum. We hope the Museum fosters a powerful connection between visitors and the story and impact of Juneteenth! How do we approach incorporating new Generative AI advances into our creative process? With high curiosity and low expectations. KPF generously hosted our Creative Director Stephen Baker as part of their ongoing Labs series. He shared thoughts on where Generative AI falls on the continuum of technology-aided design practices that have reached back through decades, what Gen AI is good for (and not so good for), and some of our favorite explorations into using AI visualization to bring early ideas to life. Thanks to the Kohn Pedersen Fox team for having us, and we'll catch you on the other side of the uncanny valley. #kohnpedersenfox #ai #generativeai #design
