STAFF SPOTLIGHT 🌟 Meet Kelsey Scharton, purchasing specialist at the Steve Joel District Leadership Center. She manages purchase orders for district projects and supplies, while always working to make her team feel supported. Learn more about Kelsey in her Q&A below. "Kelsey has excellent organizing skills and communication. She is always thinking of ways to help us work more efficiently and has created some really great data tracking systems." - Lovena Glantz, purchasing technician. In a few sentences, briefly describe your role at LPS. I am a purchasing specialist in the purchasing department. I process the purchase orders for district construction and maintenance projects, computing services-related equipment as well as the district's paper supplies. How long have you worked for LPS? I have been with LPS for four years! I started as a secretary at Elliott Elementary (shoutout Owls!) and moved to my current role in 2023. What inspired you to become part of the education field at LPS? When looking to pivot into a different career, it was very important to work for a company that makes an impact within the community and supports our local youth. LPS was a no-brainer as it encompasses all of my values as part of its mission. What has been your favorite part of working here? What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding? I absolutely love being able to learn new things every day. Every day brings new adventures and I love to be a part of the moving process of supporting individuals within our district. One of the things I find most rewarding is being able to be a TeamMates mentor and to directly make an impact with the youth in our schools as well as being able to support them behind the scenes in my day-to-day tasks. It's the best of both worlds! Did you attend LPS as a student? If so, which school(s)? If not, where are you from? I attended the Montessori program at Everett Elementary, Pound Middle School and Southwest High School. What path did you take after completing your formal education? I attended Southeast Community College. What do you enjoy most about the Lincoln community? Lincoln really embodies the motto "The Good Life.” It is culturally diverse and has a strong sense of community. What is your favorite childhood book or a book that has influenced your life positively? A book that has influenced my life positively would be “Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy Seals Lead and Win” by Jocko Willink. Share a shout out to a former teacher who impacted your life. "It’s pretty exciting for everyone.” When the Mickle Missiles come back to the classroom this fall, they'll be greeted with the completion of several facility improvement projects. Changes include a new front entrance, refurbished cafeteria and updated family and consumer sciences, art and industrial technology classrooms. STAFF SPOTLIGHT 🌟 Meet Mansoor Al-Bayati, assistant custodial supervisor at the Steve Joel District Leadership Center! Over the past six years at LPS, Mansoor’s kindness and meticulous work have made a positive impact every day. Learn more about Mansoor in his Q&A below. “Mansoor is simply amazing. He does great work, which is frequently noticed and commented on by others. He is helpful, friendly and kind. I worked with Mansoor at West Lincoln Elementary School a few years ago. My friends there still talk about how much he is missed and how wonderful he is.” - Lindsay Stobbe, computing services help desk tech. How long have you worked for LPS? Six years. What inspired you to become part of the education field at LPS? I was always excited to see the type of student services provided by LPS. There are a variety of innovative programs that focus on supporting a wide student body. I was intrigued to join and be a part of the community that serves thousands of individuals and provides a good valuable education. What has been your favorite part of working here? What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding? My favorite part about being with LPS is meeting new people and the most rewarding part of my job is when I get recognized for my hard work and accomplishments. Did you attend LPS as a student? If so, which school(s)? If not, where are you from? I grew up in Iraq. What path did you take after completing your formal education? I worked in the HVAC industry in Iraq and Jordan for 24 years before moving to the United States. However, when I moved to the United States, I was not able to pursue my education due to family responsibilities and duties. I worked with LPS as a custodian and then progressed in my career to become a custodial supervisor assistant. What do you enjoy most about the Lincoln community? I enjoy the friendly environment in Lincoln and people's willingness to help others! Share a shout out to a former teacher who impacted your life. Miss Hana. STAFF SPOTLIGHT 🌟 Meet Lynn Goering, nutrition specialist at the Steve Joel District Leadership Center! Lynn cares deeply about students' health, crafting special diet menus tailored to individual needs. Her commitment ensures that every student can safely experience the joy of eating at school. Learn more about Lynn in her Q&A below. “Lynn works directly with parents, students and cafeteria staff in order to create the perfect menu for students that will keep them healthy, satisfied and safe. Monthly, she creates special diet menus for cafeteria staff to follow using her broad knowledge of food items and their ingredients.” - Shellie Haun, nutrition services technology support. How long have you worked for LPS? I came to LPS in the summer of 2017, and the seven years I've been here have flown by. What inspired you to become part of the education field at LPS? Originally, I thought my dream job as a dietitian would be to work in a hospital. It was my dream job for about five years, but when my son became seriously ill, I realized I'd spent enough time in the hospital environment. Purely by accident, I stumbled upon a job with the Child and Adult Care Food Program, which provides education and support for childcare providers. That eventually led me to a job with the USDA WIC program. The Women Infants and Children Program provides education to families as well as nutritional foods, which led to another great opportunity working in the Nebraska Department of Education, and the school lunch program. It seemed like everything came full circle when LPS had a vacancy for my position. What has been your favorite part of working here? What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding? I love talking about food. I believe that eating should be joyful and that lunch is one of the most important parts of the student's day. It's a chance for them to decompress, eat with their friends, nourish themselves, relax and recharge. There are many rewarding and interesting aspects of my job, but I think parent and staff interactions are extremely rewarding. When I speak to nervous or concerned parents, I can relate. I remember when we were in the thick of dealing with my son's health issues, and how scary it was. I didn't want him to be treated like one of the masses or just another patient. Parents need to hear that their child is important and that we want their child to have a positive, safe experience eating at school. Next, I work to create menus with clear instructions for the kitchen that are also appetizing for the students. The school cafeteria staff are the front line, preparing the special meals and interacting with the students every day. We all share the same goal—a delicious, safe school meal for every child, even those with special dietary needs. What do you enjoy most about the Lincoln community? I grew up in a town of 1,200.
