The Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) proudly stands at the forefront of its field as a world-class IT service and computing user facility serving Munich’s top universities and colleges as well as research institutions in Bavaria, Germany and Europe. As an institute of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, LRZ has provided a robust, holistic IT infrastructure for its users throughout the scientific community for more than sixty years. It offers the complete range of resources, services, consulting and support - from email, web servers and Internet access to virtual machines, cloud solutions, data storage and the Munich Scientific Network (MWN). Exciting updates from Munich Quantum Valley, where the ParityQC team and our partners are building a 100-qubit quantum computer demonstrator based on superconducting qubits in the MUNIQC-SC project. Two and a half years after the project launch, the consortium has achieved significant milestones regarding hardware, software and algorithms. From the hardware standpoint, the consortium has successfully built a 17-qubit chip based on the surface code, which serves as a testbed for NISQ algorithms and developing error correction techniques. We’ve also made significant progress with the compiler and the device’s future integration into supercomputing ecosystems such as the one of Leibniz Supercomputing Centre. In the near future, users from academia and industry will be able to solve combinatorial optimization problems with quantum computing by submitting the problem to Leibniz Supercomputing Centre which in turn will be connected to a quantum computer via the cloud. ParityOS will be key in realizing this, and our team will work on the integration of the most sophisticated new features of ParityOS into the framework. Lastly, we and the project partners are evaluating different types of quantum algorithms for their performance for the specific type of hardware and the current fidelity.
