Access to Justice is NEXT WEEK! This year, we are pleased to present the titular Access to Justice Award to Liberty Hill Foundation President and CEO Shane Goldsmith. Shane Goldsmith has dedicated her career to improving communities in Los Angeles and promoting social change. She is a former Vice President of the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) Commission, and has served on the Commission for the Housing Authority of the City of LA. Prior to joining Liberty Hill, Shane was the Executive Director of P.A.T.H. PEOPLE ASSISTING THE HOMELESS Ventures, an affordable housing development agency. She also served as a senior advisor to then-City Council President Eric Garcetti, overseeing housing, economic development, the city budget, public safety and LGBTQ issues. Shane has also worked as a community organizer focusing on economic justice in low income communities of color in LA. The U.S. Constitution promises equal justice to all Americans, regardless of wealth or social status. But recent battles about addressing homelessness have thrown into question whether unhoused individuals are receiving equal treatment under the law. For #ConstitutionAndCitizenshipDay tomorrow, join LA Law Library and LAFLA Senior Attorney Shayla Myers for a live Zoom discussion on "Protecting the Constitutional Rights of Unhoused People." This event will review decisions by America’s courts relating to the criminalization of homelessness, and reflect on the promises and limitations of the Constitution in addressing policy issues related to poverty and housing insecurity. When: Tuesday, September 17, 2024 (12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.) Where: Zoom Register: https://lnkd.in/gG3CBKMr

LAFLA’s 26th Annual Access to Justice Gala is only 2 weeks away! This year, we are pleased to present the Maynard Toll Award for Distinguished Public Service to civil rights attorney Carol Sobel, Law Office of Carol A. Sobel. Carol is a leading advocate for the rights of unhoused people and against the criminalization of homelessness. She served as LAFLA’s co-counsel in Mitchell vs. City of Los Angeles, upholding unhoused people's constitutional rights against the destruction of their property. And in 2006, she litigated the landmark case Jones vs. City of Los Angeles, in which the Ninth Circuit ruled that it was illegal to arrest people sleeping on the street when there were no available shelter beds. LAFLA is indebted to Carol Sobel's vision and leadership in the fight for justice for all. Join us on Wednesday, September 25, to celebrate Carol’s achievements in public interest law. 🎉 More information and tickets 🎟️at the 🔗 in our bio 👉 2024 Access to Justice Gala
