    We had our 6th successful Elevate Team Impact roundtable! Discussing how leaders can successfully build cohesive teams with Andre Martin, author of Wrong Fit, Right Fit, as guest host, and MC David Bumby, SVP at LEAD3R, was exciting. Key takeaways on building cohesive teams included: 1) Scaling Challenges: Proximity and Culture: In small teams, culture and collaboration are natural and automatic. As teams grow, maintaining a cohesive culture becomes more challenging due to the complexity introduced by a larger number of interactions and working styles. 2) Cultural Evolution: Diverse Practices: As organizations expand, their culture often evolves into a mix of various practices rather than a unified, distinctive culture. Even successful companies like Google, Netflix, and Nike face this issue as they grow. 3) Impact of Existing Relationships: Buffer Effect: In larger organizations, existing relationships can help manage cultural chaos, but they can also limit the integration and effectiveness of new team members who are less connected to these established networks.     Research in recent years points to the importance of empathetic leadership. Due to a number of factors – a nationwide labor shortage, the upheaval of the pandemic, growing awareness of racial inequity, growth of the gig economy where workers have more choices – now more than ever, employees are looking for a workplace where they feel seen, valued and supported. Empathy is the ability to emotionally understand what other people feel, see things from their point of view, and imagine yourself in their place. It is a cognitive process – a way of thinking and processing information. Empathetic leadership is a competency, or a set of behaviors. Having empathy for your employees is just the start. The critical next step is to demonstrate it. This can be a challenge for many leaders. Empathetic leadership requires you to be vulnerable, ask questions, be open to difficult conversations, and resist the urge to solve your employees’ problems. It demands you make space for other people’s emotions while managing your own. An empathetic leader helps people feel valued, respected and seen while still holding team members accountable and driving business results.     Overwhelmed? Burnt out? Overwhelm and burnout are common challenges among busy leaders. Overwhelm occurs when you have too much on your plate, a lot of conflicting priorities or when personal issues compound work-related stress. Left unaddressed, overwhelm can lead to burnout, leaving you physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted. Too often, our culture glorifies the grind. We’re encouraged to take on as much as possible and power through to get it done. Many leaders tend to everyone else’s needs and have nothing left for themselves.
